Mangotsfield United….1 Basingstoke Town….1
Report Dave Smale
Mangotsfield’s run of defeats was halted with a 1-1 draw against a revitalised Basingstoke side, who looked nothing like a side at the foot of the table
As with any game under floodlights, the action seemed to be played at 100mph & the first 20 minutes or so saw Mangotsfield create at least 6 good chances, but none were converted. First, Lee Hartshorn saw his shot on 7 minutes from the edge of the box diverted for a corner. Moments later, Tom Hillman’s jinking run saw his shot saved by Basingstoke keeper Chris Rackley. Robbie Cox then fired wide from 20 yards (10) and another Tom Hillman strike flew across the visitors’ goal on 11 minutes. Matt Tanner then worked his way into the box after a good team move to see his shot pushed away (12) & 3 minutes later, he was brought down on the edge of the box, only for Tom Hillman to see his free kick blocked by the visitors’ defensive wall. Dan Demkiv then got onto the scene by seeing his shot saved by Chris Rackley (16), before Jack Wakefield was put through down the right on 22 minutes, only for Rackley to save his shot too.
Basingstoke’s first serious goal attempt came on 24 minutes when Harrison Cliff fired over from 10 yards following a right wing cross & then 2 minutes later, a Basingstoke free-kick & corner also caused problems in the home defence, before being cleared. Back came the Mangos with Matt Tanner firing high & wide from 25 yards (27), but then Basingstoke went dangerously close to scoring when home keeper Liam Armstrong turned a shot away for a corner, which was then subsequently cleared off the line (28). Basingstoke began to come more into the game at this point. First Harrison Cliff went close when his shot flew across the home goal (32) & then a free kick by Claudio Herbert only just went wide of the left hand post (36). Minutes later, another Basingstoke shot went agonizingly close, following a goalmouth scramble, but the final action of the first half saw Jack Wakefield turn a Dan Demkiv cross just past the far post with the visitors’ keeper well beaten.
HT: Mangotsfield United 0, Basingstoke Town 0
The 2nd half began brightly for Basingstoke, with plenty of possession, but on 50 minutes, Mangotsfield took the lead, when Tom Hillman ended a visitors’ attack, broke out of defence & ran through the middle. He set up Dan Demkiv on the edge of the box, who chipped the ball into the top right corner past keeper Chris Rackley. Mangotsfield almost scored a 2nd goal 5 minutes later when Tom Hillman’s free kick was spilled by Rackley, but the ball was cleared before Lee Hartshorn could get to it.
Basingstoke levelled on 61 minutes when Benjamin Cook completed a decent team move down the right before firing past Liam Armstrong. After that, the visitors began to dominate possession & were in the ascendancy, but lacked the end product to take the lead as Mangotsfield were constantly pushed back. Hope came for the hosts, however, on 78 minutes when Basingstoke defender Ryan Suckling was shown a straight red card for a foul on Mangotsfield substitute Marcus Kelly, but the visitors’ 10 men rallied to the cause and two minutes later, they should have taken the lead when sub D’Andre Brown was through on goal, one on one with keeper Liam Armstrong, but the home keeper saved the day with a vital save.
The final 10 minutes were tough on Mangotsfield, who were visibly tiring, as the visitors’ 10 men upped their game again & were putting us under constant late pressure, which included a late strike by sub D’Andre Brown that went just wide of goal. Mangotsfield, however, stood firm to keep the 10 men out to claim a hard-fought point against a side who surely won’t be at the bottom of the table for too long, but manager Ollie Price will no doubt rue some of the missed chances in the opening 20 minutes when we dominated the game.
