Park book Shield quarter final with Copsewood victory

A SEVEN-try success sparked the start of Manor Park's competitive season in this Warwickshire Shield preliminary round tie.
Four scores in the first half was backed up by three in the second as the hosts dominated their plucky and spirited opponents.
The victory earns Park a quarter-final showdown with Southam on Saturday.
The first score was nearly registered minutes into play when a half-break from hooker Lee Critchlow prompted a rushed offload to Matt Marston which was well intercepted by an eagle-eyed Copsewood player.
A familiar theme was to begin when Copsewood were penalised at the breakdown, and Dan Joyce arrowed an unerring, spiralling kick deep into enemy territory.
From the five-metre lineout claimed by the safe hands of Richard Ette, a rolling maul ensued and number eight Adam Lawrence dropped across the whitewash to score a forwards' try.
Lawrence was back in the thick of the action from the restart, catching well, breaking blind and releasing Joe Reynolds to make 30 metres but the pass to Adam Brown on his outside shoulder wasn't made in time.
A Joyce penalty into the bomb-hole corner saw the setpiece secured and spun wide between Joyce, Reynolds, Brown and finally to fullback Jonny Hincks to finish ruthlessly from ten metres out.
Former Coventrians and Bedworth man Ben Davis, making his competitive debut had a key part to play in Park's next two tries.
Firstly he combined well with Hincks on the drift to push his side into the 22, two phases ensued before Cameron Forryan found a gap to touch down.
But arguably the try of the game came next when Joyce's arching run was well supported by Davis, advancing tight to the touchline he drew his man well before returning the ball to Joyce to score.
Forryan, playing at outside centre, looked like he had scored his second try but was adjudged to have been held up.
Despite conceding a raft of penalties in the red zone, Copsewood managed to retain the services of all 15 players - unlike Park who lost Chris Cook ten minutes before the interval for not rolling away from the tackle.
Copsewood made their one man advantage tell by scoring from a close range lineout.
Park twice grounded the ball over the Copsewood line before half time, but were brought back on both occasions by the referee for alleged forward passes.
Brown impressed on the wing and deserved a try, for the second time he was denied that joy by a third forward pass call from the match official after the restart.
Attacking up the slope, Park endured a frustrating spell with balls being spilled from tackles as perhaps players lost their cool and patience in the search for more scores.
Copsewood scored their second try when a limp chip prompted an unfortunate slip in the Park backline allowing the winger a simple chance to score.
Arron Owen and Mark Wickett entered the field of play in place of Matt Marston and Ben Davis, Neil Fitzpatrick had also arrived from the bench earlier in the game to plug the gap left by Cook's sin-binning.
The penalties kept coming Park's way and Joyce punched kicks to touch, with Park's line out working well, Manor meandered forward in a maul well-marshalled by Lawrence who in-turn broke from five metres out to bundle his way over for his second and his side's fifth try.
Substitute Arron Owen had a good chance to score but spilled a close range pass from Joyce and shortly afterwards a fourth try was disallowed for a forward pass.
The referee's keenness to yellow card a Park player wasn't extended to the visitors who continued to give away penalties.
From another catch and drive Park pushed close to the line but somehow the ball was spilled and another golden chance was spurned.
The sixth try did arrive soon after as Joyce switched play and worked the numbers for Marston to feed prop Fitzpatrick to score 15 metres from the touchline.
The final try of the encounter arrived when scrum-half Danny Blundred showed his poaching instinct to reach over from a metre out to score under pressure.
Park will need to tidy up their play for the challenge of Southam and make their chances pay.
Eight try-scoring opportunities in the red zone; four forward passes, one crossing offence and two knock ons and one held up score went begging - potentially another 56 points.
But it's the start of a new era under a fresh coaching team who will be pleased to make a winning start in the season's first competitive encounter.
