MANOR Park’s first team secured two victories in one afternoon as they ran eight tries past Broadstreet Extras.
A month-long break from competitive action was due to end at the Griff and Coton with the visit of struggling Redditch.
But the Worcestershire side opted against travelling, handing Park a five-point bonus win without lifting a finger.
With the gap between their last league game, a 69-0 away success at Kings Norton, and the next one away at Stoke Old Boys on November 7, now stretching to six weeks – head coach Kevin Venus has kept his side on their toes.
A mixed squad of first teamers and seconds tackled Tamworth, losing narrowly, then a largely second string pushed Shottery all the way to a single-point loss.
But the intensity has cranked up in the past two weekends with Dunlop being dispatched before this superb performance at a rainy Griff and Coton.
While the conditions were miserable, the rugby certainly wasn’t.
With 18 minutes on the clock, the hosts had ran home four tries.
The first arrived after five minutes when Will Woodward span out to Callum Bishop, who aggressively attacked the gain line and cantered upfield.
Simon Hall advanced his side deep into the opposition 22 but was caught inches from the line. Charlie Wilson was in close support to receive the popped pass to score.
Bishop was the instigator once more three minutes later as he grubbered up the hill into the top left hand corner and Dave Hickey scooped up a fortunate bounce to touchdown.
Number eight Dave Melville launched a blindside attack after 12 minutes, drawing his man before popping to Michael Kemp.
The second rower, in text book fashion, delivered a perfect pass under pressure to free Jonny Hincks for a sprint into the corner from 15 metres out.
The fourth try arrived just three minutes later when prop Chris Cook juggled a pass before offloading near to the line. He stayed sharp afterwards to receive the ball from the breakdown to stomp over from five metres out.
Broadstreet had travelled with the minimum 15 players but clearly had some talented players in their ranks.
They managed to earn a score when a centre received a perfectly-timed pass to race through a gap from close range.
Five minutes before half time, Park picked up their fifth try.
Luke Creaney enjoyed a lively afternoon with ball in hand searching for gaps in the Broadstreet backline.
The centre broke from halfway into the 22 where he passed to captain Chris Goode who went agonisingly close to the line.
Hall was on hand to pick up and reach over to give his side a 29-7 half-time lead.
In the true spirit of rugby union, Park’s player/coach Matt Cappell pulled on a Broadstreet shirt five minutes before the interval due to an injury.
The 15 minutes that followed after the interval were scoreless but there were still some highlights.
Cappell put a shuddering hit on Hall to stop the back rower in his tracks and Joe Graham tapped a ‘mark’ before racing into the bombhole corner before his pass was fumbled.
Venus rang the changes with Matt Marston, Liam Rose and Lineker Lashley arriving in place of Will Woodward, Michael Kemp and Adam Moore.
The fresh blood seemed to spark life back into Park’s performance.
In the 56th minute, from another formidable scrum, Melville picked from the base and pierced a gap between flanker and fly-half to race over for his team’s sixth try.
The tries Creaney had threatened all day arrived when he firstly finished off a backs move from 30 metres out.
Broadstreet managed a second try after a succession of penalties earned them acres of territory.
Josh Carvell picked up another first-team appearance when he jogged on with 15 minutes to play.
Creaney gained the game’s final score when he weaved a run to the line before turning on the after burners to score 15 metres out from the posts.
Bishop’s conversion drifted wide as the half-century was just missed and now the focus is on Friday night’s trip to face Keresley (7.30) in another friendly clash.
