Brian Lister is no longer with us but he left an indelible mark on the history of Marden Over 40’s and the people who knew him.

Upon leaving school Brian served his apprenticeship
at Swan Hunters Wallsend where he worked as a fitter. On early retirement Brian became groundsman at Tynemouth Cricket club and latterly Kings School Tynemouth. Mild mannered and softly spoken Brian was highly respected by everyone who knew him.

The younger brother of Michael Lister who won the FA Amateur Cup with North Shields in 1969 Brian was not only a terrific footballer but an accomplished athlete having represented Northumberland County at
Athletics as a school in boy and in his teenage years Northumberland County Cricket Team.
A true all rounder with bat and ball.

Brian’s football career started around West Allotment Celtic in the Northern Amateur League and in the latter years North Shields St Columbas. In those days players tended to retire in their early 30’s and be coaxed back later into Over 40’s. Not Brian who played right the way through to his early 50’s.

A left side midfielder Brian was a terrific athlete who had the endurance and athleticism to get up and down the field and although naturally right footed he was equally proficient with both feet. Highly skilful his goals contribution was in double figures every season and he played in several Marden teams who achieved league and cup success. Gone but never forgotten.
