Richard Reflects

Every month club legend Richard Percy will remember a former Marden player who has contributed to the success of the club.

For July, Richard focuses on Founding Member John Weir.

John Weir, a co-founder of Marden Over 40's in 1981, played a significant role in shaping the club's history. Together with Colin White, he established the club, which later joined the Sunderland and District Over 40's league. Prior to this, John had been instrumental in founding and managing junior teams in the Marden Estate area of North Shields. Many of the young players who started under John's guidance eventually progressed to play for the Over 40's team. Notable individuals such as Davey Williams, Frankie Taylor, and Barry Knox emerged from John's junior side.

Beyond his contributions to football, John was also a highly respected policeman in North Shields, rising to the rank of Police Inspector. During the Meadow Well riots in 1991, he played a prominent role in calming tensions among local youth who knew him through football. It is said that John even secured temporary releases for some important players who were serving time for their misdemeanors, enabling them to participate in crucial cup finals before returning to complete their sentences.

Furthermore, John served as the registration secretary on the Over 40's league committee, showcasing his dedication to the sport. An enduring legend surrounding him involves overhearing a player, who had recently played against Marden, discussing his 40th birthday party at a pub where they had gathered for post-match drinks. John took it upon himself to travel to Durham registry office, track down the player's birth certificate, and subsequently fine the club for fielding an underage player. This anecdote exemplifies John's unwavering commitment to fairness and integrity, qualities that continue to resonate within the club to this day.

Tragically, John passed away in 2013 at the age of 74. It is undeniable that the club owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to him for his instrumental role in its development. Every player who has proudly worn the Marden shirt can attribute their extended football careers, in part, to John's indelible contributions. His legacy remains a vital part of the club's identity and success.
