Mariners sunk as Seasiders go nap at Arriva...

Match report by Dave McMillan

Marine went down to their second heavy home defeat inside a week on Saturday, losing 5-2 to Whitby Town at the Arriva Stadium.

Frustratingly the Whites found themselves 2-0 down in a first half they pretty much dominated, Danny Mitchley signing off from his loan with a goal to halve the arrears with several chances to level spurned before the break.

Many observers felt the game was salvageable at that point but another brace of goals early in the second half put paid to that notion, before Town substitute Steven Snaith added a fifth late on to compound the home misery.

Mitchley had two shots in the opening exchanges, Whitby gloveman Nick Liversedge fielding one effort and seeing the other clear the bar from 25 yards.

Marine looked dangerous from set pieces, Michael Ordish sending over a corner for Paul Jones to glance a header narrowly wide of the far post.

Whitby had a let off from another Ordish corner, an almighty scramble in the goalmouth eventually being cleared with the ball coming back over to the far post, Mitchley driving a shot in to the side netting.

The Seasiders’ only real foray in to the home area had been when Graeme Armstrong’s header back across goal was cleared, but they grabbed the lead on 26 minutes when Armstrong converted Craig Farrell’s right wing cross from close range.

The lead was doubled just four minutes later, Danny Grannon pulling off a fine block tackle to deny Armstrong but the loose ball being calmy steered in to the net by Farrell from just inside the penalty area.

The shellshocked Mariners quickly responded through Mitchley, a throw in sitting up nicely for the striker to crack a spectacular long distance volley in to the top corner on 34 minutes.

Jones glanced another header wide from another Ordish corner before Marine should have been level, Matty Devine getting away in the box and squaring to the far post for Rogan to fall victim to the curse of the bobble, blazing over a gaping goal from six yards.

Matty Brown had a goal bound effort blocked for a corner and then came close to scoring just before half time, his header somehow staying out of the net via a combination of keeper, defender and post.

Just two minutes after the restart the home defence was breached again, Armstrong turning his man rather too easily and blasting past Ryan McMahon.

The visitors effectively killed the game on 53 minutes, Brown tripping Farrell right on the edge of the box with the recent signing from Blyth dusting himself off, before thumping the free kick in to the bottom corner of the net.

The flurry of goals continued as the Mariners again reduced the arrears three minutes later, Rogan collecting the ball and beating Liversedge with a low drive just inside the near post.

Rogan looked as though he had been hauled down after hesitation between goalkeeper and covering defender, and then had a shot fly narrowly wide of the target as Marine searched for a way back in to the match.

The Mariners ran out of steam in the end and Whitby added a fifth goal on 86 minutes, substitute Steven Snaith advancing unchallenged in to the right of the area to fire home an angled drive.
