Defensive Errors Provide An Early Christmas Present For Ramsbottom
By Cliff Taylor
3 Goals Conceded In 10 Minute Period
MDTFC went into this game knowing that they had a task on their hands against an in form Ramsbottom team that had only suffered one defeat in their past fifteen games.
Having suffered two successive defeats we were looking to get back to winning ways buoyed by the fact that we had a full squad of sixteen players - not many times this season that we have had a full bench of substitutes.
Charlie Knowles and Simon Gregory were unavailable alongside injured keeper Ash Rawlins.
Ramsbottom started the game brightly and their searching through balls were causing problems for the MDTFC defence; and on eleven minutes a Ramsbottom header went just past Mason Springthorpe's right hand post.
On 12 minutes we nearly took the lead, perhaps against the run of play, when a superb cross by Glynn Coney was met by Harvey Howell whose powerful shot had goal written all over it - well not quite as the Ramsbottom keeper Sam Ashton produced a fantastic point blank save.
On 16 minutes Mason produced a fine save to keep us in the game.
At this stage of the game we were continually over hitting long balls out of defence and not getting the ball directly to the forward line.
On 28 minutes Glynn Coney hit a searching free kick across the face of the Ramsbottom goal, unfortunately no one could get the final touch.
On 35 minutes the wheels fell off the MDTFC bus - from a MDTFC corner Ramsbottom keeper, Sam Ashton, quickly turned defence into attack by sending a searching ball into the MDTFC half, which saw Desean Martin running shoulder to shoulder with Ramsbottom's Jamie Rainford - under pressure Desean unfortunately headed the ball over the head of keeper Mason Springthorpe to give Rambottom the lead.
Four minutes later a misguided defensive header across the MDTFC six yard line from Paul McMullen fell to Ruben Jerome who accepted the gifted ball to drive into the MDTFC goal.
MDTFC 0 Ramsbottom 2
On the stroke of half time Ramsbottom were awarded a corner, from which Ramsbottom scored their third a decisive goal.
Half-Time: MDTFC 0 Ramsbottom 3.
The second half saw Harvey Howell replaced by left full back Myles Arnold with Matt Ballard adding his height to the forward line.
Will Wells was also replaced in the second half by Lyndon Campbell.
Substitute attacking options were perhaps limited in so much that the substitute bench was occupied by defenders and midfielders.
We fared much better in the second half and our efforts were finally rewarded on 81 minutes when Glynn Coney converted a penalty.
On 82 minutes Jud Elllis hit a pile driver from distance which flew just over the Ramsbottom cross bar.
