The second team welcomed Belgrave 2nd XV to Northampton Road for their first league game following the festive break. A blistering second half performance earned a well deserved victory.

Following a highly accomplished warm up led by the experienced Tom Lee, Harborough started the day brightly with an early try within minutes of the kick off. Jamie Thorpe worked hard as he danced through the Belgrave defence to score what would be the first of many Harborough try’s.

Showing that his kicking looked to be in form, man of the match Harris Medwell slotted the conversion. Jake Abblett, who broke through the Belgrave defence throughout the game, showed a surprising turn of pace from the back of a scrum in Harborough’s half. Having gone through the hands, Meadwell ran in from 30 yards for his first try of the day. Not long later Abblett made another break this time from the back of a ruck to touch down for his own well-earned try.

Harborough’s fourth try came from a brilliant set piece move which saw some slick hands from Lee Buttler who put Medwell through the gap and Henery Davis finished well in the corner. Belgrave hit back hard trying to stay in the game and managed to score an unconverted try. The visitors quickly gained field position from the kick off and were pressuring Harborough’s try line. Harborough’s defence looked solid but the referee decided to even things up and awarded Harborough’s talisman and Captain, Dan Carter, 10 minutes on the side line. Belgrave sensed an opportunity and Harborough looked stretched as they approached half time. Belgrave went over for their second of the day, leaving Harborough 26-10 ahead at half time.

After a cagey start to the second half, Harborough found their form and started to control the game in both the set pieces and open play. Harborough were in full flow when Medwell opened his legs and showed his class as he ran though for his second try of the day. Belgrave did manage to work another unconverted try having battled through the Harborough defence.

It was then time to introduce Aaron “the hulk” Lyle to the game! After coming on at half time Lyle decided that it was time for him to score. Coming in from his centre position Lyle picked the ball from the back of a ruck in Harborough’s own half and boshed through the Belgrave forwards trying to stop him. Having made the break Lyle dodged the remaining defence to touch down for his first try. Lyle had enough breath left in his tank to score his second shortly afterwards following excellent play from Charlie Stanley who sucked in the Belgrave centres and put Lyle through. Harborough’s next try came courtesy of a pinpoint kick from scrumhalf George Wade placing the ball in the hands of Thorpe. His quick feet put him under the posts once more.

It was left to Captain Carter to finish off the game with two well-deserved try’s of his own. His first saw him run a beautiful line and run through a gap to touch down. His second saw him picking up a loose ball from the back of a ruck and see off the tacklers to score. With Medwell kicking seven out of his 9 conversions and Davis one, Harborough won the game convincingly 66-15. With an all-round impressive performance, Harborough look to be a team to fear as they continue their charge at the top of the league.
