Confident win based on strong defence and willing runners

Harborough Colts got the 2016/17 season under way in fine style with a confident win of Old Northamptonians. On a blustery day at Northampton Road with rainy squalls, this friendly game started with a typical early season pattern of misplaced passes and knock on’s limiting either teams ability to gain any possession or territory. After 15 mins On’s got a penalty and kick for the corner, from the resulting lineout drove over to score and added the extras (0-7). Although the lineout was rusty, the scrum was solid and there was great all round defence and cover tackling. As the game progressed Harborough’s backs looked dangerous on several occasions and a fine passage of play unleashed winger Jack Woodward to score in the corner. This was followed by a score after good work by the forwards; first Scott Dean then Matt Carter, denting the vistors defence before unleashing Henry Povoas on the disorganised back line to score(HT 10-7)

In the second half with the wind at their backs Harborough started positively in attack and harried ON’s ball carriers in defence. Turning defence to attack a series of scruffy fly hacks and opportunistic bursts took Harborough from their own 22 to a score for Povoas (15-7). ON’s only looked like scoring from set piece and indeed scored from a carbon copy of the first, a push over try in the corner (15-12), another late penalty looked like yielding the same result but the hosts managed to avert the danger. In the last few minutes winger Harry Wells both created and scored the try that sealed the result by a combination of intelligent running and keeping the ball alive. Final Score 20-12, a great result against a traditionally strong side
