This week we decided to have all available U14 players come to the club as it was a home fixture and all players had not been together for a while. Great for the team bonding, however a nightmare when trying to get equal pitch time for everyone! We had a squad of 26 players...
MH started the game with a strong line up, playing into the wind and with the intent of registering a 'W". The first few tackles were definitely a sign of intent , as all MH players looked as if they were on a mission.
Charlie Jones, Cam Douglas and Toby Gower were the back row from heaven and were ever present in all aspects of play, they were first to the breakdown and also there to make the last chase back tackle. This meant that MH won great ruck ball which led to the first Elliott Powell try. The ball was whipped away from a ruck by Jake Dowling, to Adam Tyas who spotted the opportunity and fed the ball out wide to a line breaking Elliott who glided by the defence to score his first of 5 tries.
Fergus Gilligan, making his winger debut, was a great voice out wide and led the much improved line speed which shut down the Kesteven attack. Jame Talbot again displayed his sublime ability to beat defenders at will and is a constant threat to any defence, his 3 tries for the day were well fought and well deserved.
In the second half, as we swapped players in and out of the game and also tried some new positions, it gave Kesteven a chance to get back into the game and they managed to score three tries. The looseness did not last long as the MH players adjusted well and their on pitch communication was excellent. Both Marcus Krause and Alex Garfield were as ever letting their voice be heard and Jacob Shearing let his tackling make the noise!
An injury to George Deeley on his first game return was disappointing, however news from Mike is that he has had a few stitches and is eager to return in 3 weeks!
It was a tough game played in a great and competitive spirit. A good day at the rugby office.
