A belated thank you to MRFC first and second team players

By Leila Nairne

Watching MRFC teams playing can be good for your health

The words later on in this piece are from Alec Thomas, many of you may not have heard his name before or even know who he is, but he wanted all the players to know how he feels.

A little bit of background regarding Alec, he has been associated with the Club probably longer than some of the senior players have been alive. In his younger days he played for the Club and there is proof, as there is a team photo on the wall with him in it. The days when he was playing was when there was no Clubhouse on the Common, instead the players had to get changed at the school, drive up to the Common to play their game, return to school for a shower and then back to the shack at Elcot Lane to celebrate or commiserate. Alec was also the Senior side Fixture Secretary for a good number of years before handing the baton over to Darren.

These days, Alec takes things a little more slowly, he is a member of the 1871 Club, probably more to keep Rod Adams in line and he also represents the Club at some of the pre-match lunches hosted by the opposition Clubs. This is not always an easy job to do as some of the other Clubs can be a little unpleasant about us, but fair play, Alec takes it all in his stride and will let them know if they are stepping to close to the mark. Plus, most Saturday’s he and his wife, Liz, come and support you boys. Liz is often there with her camera taking some shots and those which are attached to the piece are hers.

The following words are those of Alec which have not been edited, but are from the heart and he wanted them to be seen my all the members as well as all those who follow the Club on Social Media;
‘A belated Thankyou you to Marlborough RFC,
As some are aware in 2016, I was given 6 months to live due to a very aggressive cancer!
But I have the all clear at the last CT and MRI scan! Mentally and spirituality I have come through this episode with the support of my family and church but also the anticipation and excitement of watching MRFC play each weekend!
This Year without doubt has been the best for the club from both teams and juniors!
Some say I was lucky, but I do not believe in that I know that there is a greater power looking after me!
Thankyou!’

All our players whether it’s the seniors, colts and the younger age groups should be very proud of themselves as you have no idea how much enjoyment you can bring to others, the way in which you conduct yourselves on and off the pitch and how you play as a team gets noticed. So even when matches may not be going the way you want, remember there is more to being part of MRFC than winning matches, that is just a bonus.
