One down and seven to go, it seems extremely likely that if United are to win the title they will have to win all remaining games.

While the task is ominous its far from impossible as I sincerely believe if United play to their potential, they really can achieve this, the toughest of challenges.

Saturday saw the visit of a youthful looking Reading City Under 23 side who came to play the game in the right way and stuck to their principles throughout the match despite being under constant pressure for 70 of the 90 minutes, which of course is of great credit to their players and management team. Another highlight was the fact there was no whingeing from their bench which is a first for this season at the Alfred Davis and the game was all the better for it added to the fact United also won 3-0 of course.

To be fair to City they have put together a talented young team and it appears, to me at least, that if they remain loyal to these players and stick with them through thick and thin they will develop into a force to be reckoned with but so often at the first opportunity clubs tend to drop reserve players for first team players at the drop of a hat to gain short term, often meaningless, gain rather than understanding that if such players as we saw on Saturday are allowed to develop properly, which means taking it on the chin occasionally, they will become so much stronger and able because of it. City appear to be applying these lessons so good luck to them and I can see them as a growing force next season if they remain loyal.

Next week United face a difficult trip to Wokingham & Emmbrook TVPL and I believe this could prove the catalyst for United’s title ambitions. A difficult game can be anticipated at Lowther Road, perhaps the most difficult of the whole run in. It will require a good performance to bring all three points home.

I did feel that Richings Park might have gained something in their match with Cookham but ended up being trounced 6-2 and with Cookham having just two league games left are now hot favourites to win the title although Woodcote have to be visited and they will I’m sure offer fierce resistance.

The reserves took a 7-0 hammering at Woodcote reserves to heighten their relegation fears.

Around the league Cookham maintained their march to the title with a 6-2 demolition of Richings Park while Berks County continued their good form with a 3-1 win at Wraysbury. Both Burghfield and Westwood United’s matches were postponed and the match between Woodley and Mortimer was abandoned due to a serious injury.

Next week United travel to Lowther Road to play Wokingham & Emmbrook TVPL and the reserves face a critical match against basement side Harchester Hawks at Derehams Lane. Both games kick off at 2pm.
