Saturday 7th November saw Martock RFC make the long journey to Winscombe RFC to play their 2XV outfit. Unfortunately we lost 3 players prior to setting off due to various reasons, which meant we travelled with the bare 15 players. Martock RFC also once again had to play with two forwards filling in the back division, and then had to play half the game with 14 men due to injury. You could then have forgiven the 15 that played for giving up and accepting their fate but this was not the case at all, the guys gave every ounce of effort and determination, and were extremely unlucky not to come away with something from this game. The first half ended with the score still 0-0 after a great defensive display playing up the slope. Winscombe RFC were adamant for the first try to have come before the 1st half, as a team that currently ranked 4th in the table. The second half saw Martock RFC play some good attacking rugby, but they could never quite finish off the good approach play. At the other end, the defence was still holding out, but with the home team boasting a squad of 21 players and bringing on fresh legs at regular intervals, it was only a matter of time before the Martock defence was ground down. As a result of shear fatigue, Winscombe RFC took full advantage and ran in three quick succession tries to seal the victory in the last 10 – 15 minutes of play.

At the end of the game, coach John Hole had no complaints about the effort the lads put in but was left ruing the chances that should have been taken. We know that at this level you have to take your chances when they come, however, we feel that we are not far off being the complete team and if we keep doing what we are doing we will be there
