Pre-Christmas Points in Perth

Apologies from the author for missing the first 5 minutes but the Invite from my brother for a fry up at the Willow tea rooms was too good to miss. Especially as he paid..!!.
The 35 first half minutes I did catch were very competitive and St Johns were well in the game. Not many chances were created by either team but St Johns had the better possession and looked comfortable on the ball. Maryfield competed very well but gave up possession by occasionally panicking on the ball. The last 5 minutes before the break saw Jordan and Paul push three up front and that changed the flow of the game.
Half Time St Johns 0 Maryfield 0
The half time team talk seemed to calm the players down and a few changes in personnel made a positive difference. Aiden Davidson and Sol Campbell were replaced by Arran Duncan and new signing Theo Glaister wearing the number 19 of recently departed Dilon Gurung. Theo and Arran were immediately in action. A neat through-ball by Theo to Nic Edwards whose early cross was met first time by Arran, his shot was straight at the keeper but it was a sign of things to come. In 47 minutes Theo was fouled 25 yards out, the resulting free kick saw Nairn Gaffney strike a beautiful curling shot into the corner of the net. 0-1. The goal settled Maryfield, the second goal came four minutes later Arran Duncan chased down a St Johns defender and forced a throw in, quick thinking saw Arran take the throw in to Ethan Mitchell his cross-field pass found Theo whose through-ball would have been cleared if not for a block by Nic, the ball fell well and Nic slotted the ball below the keeper. 0-2.
Theo was almost in himself after Ethan and Jaydn combined to release the new number 19, unfortunately a heavy touch let the defender back in. Nairn was next to sting the hands of the keeper with a great strike after a neat pass from Jaydn. St Johns weren't sitting back and Maryfield had Kyle Johnston to thank after blocking a goal bound shot from a cleared corner, then Cammy made a good save after a well struck free kick. These again sparked Maryfield into action. Nic Edwards made his second after chasing a lost cause into the corner, he stopped the ball on the line before beating 3 defenders and flicking the ball past the helpless keeper. Troy Smith got on the scoresheet after a great Ethan Mitchell tackle, the ball fell to Arran Duncan his well weighted ball into the path of Troy was all the invitation needed as the big striker calmly fired the ball into the net. Aiden Davidson replaced Frankie Hughes, Sol Campbell replaced Ethan Mitchell and Declan Mcmanus replaced Cammy Landsburgh. The last ten minutes saw St Johns work hard to get something for their efforts, a couple of powerful clearances from Aiden and Jamie kept them at bay. Only the last kick of the ball from the pacy St Johns winger which found the back of the net spoiled a fantastic second half performance.
Full Time St Johns 1 Maryfield 4.
In summary after a slow start Maryfield dominated the second half, the change to 3 up front gave St Johns trouble throughout the second half. Best wishes to all the players, coaches, parents and supporters for a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
