G-Mac On Tour (Again)

G-Mac On Tour (Again)

Martin Coyd13 Mar - 20:14

When the Glitter of Hull Fair meets the bright lights of Las Vegas.

August 2024 and I am already thinking about not just the year`s Grand Final but also wondering if a trip to watch the 2025 USA event was within my remit. Playing Masters Rugby League in the South of England already means I am used to travelling to get a game, but this was going to be a challenge. Once some key Masters RL members made clear that a playing tournament was going to be organised to run alongside the weekend, the decision was made. Flights then booked; the new direct debit was set up to have funds available to enjoy the trip. It was to be the second year of such an event and those people who participated in the inaugural staging were soon tapping the keys of social media to support those wanting to find out more. Where to stay, ESTA Visa online form, playing insurance, USA playing registration and match day fees all had to be navigated along with kit orders to make sure things were moving forward.

Heathrow on 25 February was a much more welcoming place than it usually is. RL shirts from across the country could be seen and friendly nods exchanged as we queued for the usual rituals. Those travelling down through London commented how the capital looked and felt a bit like Challenge Cup Final Day with all the club colours evident on tube and train platforms. Conversations in the departure lounge turned to the exchange of stories as to how we each became part of the rugby league community. Onto the plane to rub shoulders with some of the England women`s team and the realisation that things were well underway!

Then in all its glory the lights of the strip as I taxi to the Luxor Hotel and the within no time learning that all lifts in the world are not vertical, and a 39-degree ascent felt most strange, but it was a clear indication that all in Las Vegas was far from the norm. The Masters` WhatsApp group was already busy with notifications of who had arrived, where they were staying and who had a car hire to provide lifts if required.

Freemont Street was the place to be on the Thursday ahead of the game as Rugby League was treated to the full-on razzamatazz normally associated with American sporting events. Happy to say the fans received it well and participated in a manner that impressed hosts and media alike. Want to visit a world that encourages you to indulge and literally do what you want? Well (if you have the time and the money) this is the place! For those collecting tour and playing shirts, it was collection from the suitably named Dawg House Bar for those feeling guilty about travelling single having left loved-ones behind.

Friday was the day for Masters to run around and believe once again that they were still fit and ready for a Challenge Cup Final. Representative teams from Australia, Canada, Expats, USA and Wales had the joy of playing out 0:0 draws in the heat of a glorious Spring Day at the McCarran Marketplace Park. By the end our bodies had reminded us that time moves on and increasing disorder reigns. Quick shower back at hotel and then off to the Sand Dollar bar for full rehydration and awards to be issued amid the noise and mayhem of shirt swaps and fantasy recollections of what individuals think had happened on the day. Thanks need to go out to those who made it happen but as usual it is too easy to be unaware of all those responsible. However, of note are Mike Brogan and Mark Oldham and of course Mr Masters himself Paul Field for briefing and sorting the match officials for the day.

Saturday brought the big day of 4 games on the bounce at the Allegiant Stadium. Blessed with a fine day of warm sunshine meant the walk to the ground was full of joy and expectation and plenty of Super League and NRL shirts dotted around the ground. The stadium itself had a warm and atmospheric feel, a closed roof like Cardiff and a sound system that made your chest resonate. Without doubt it was the final game worth waiting for as the Panthers beat the Sharks in a close game.

Flight home on the Monday evening and I was again rubbing shoulders with some of the great as several Wigan Players and Head coach were sat in proximity. The surrounding Warrington fans were very reserved and allowed them to sleep the whole flight!
Talks of a bigger event next year are already in the making with rumours of Tonga and New Zealand bringing teams. If you are interested, then keep a watch on the Masters Website for news about dates for 2026 and I am sure an experience you will never forget.

God bless Rugby League.

Graham McManus (Medway Dragons Masters).
