This seemed to shake the boy's confidence and it took most of the first half before play improved. During this time Southwell manage another try on the opposite side on the pitch. Towards the end of the first half the team were much better and made their way up to just short of the try line only for the ball to be lost forward. In the second half our forwards started to fight back with Tyrelle leading the charge. The team put Southwell under pressure and we managed to get the ball to Jam who went over to score our first try. Tyrelle missed the conversion but it looked like we were coming back into the game. It seemed fairly even between the teams with Southwell getting a third try before Jam made a great run to score his second try and Tyrelle succeeded in converting it. After the second 20 minutes there was another break and then the teams came back on for a planned further 15 minutes. Unfortunately after about 5 minutes Thomas hit his head on the ground very hard during a tackle. He wanted to continue but after checking him over the coaches felt that he should not continue and so both he and the team came off the pitch. He felt dizzy but fully recovered a few hours afterwards.
Mellish RFC including the under 13's coaches continue to put the players safety above everything else and will make decisions to take players off the pitch if their safety is at risk. The parents made it clear that they fully agree with this view.
