Boys top off the year with an accomplished performance

Last game of 2019 saw the boys travel to Timperley to play on the Astro. With the U14s also playing there was a strong presence from the Mellor parents, along with, it was noted, a few sore heads from the previous evening’s mad Friday festivities!

Still, nothing like a good game of lacrosse in what turned out to be pretty decent weather to clear the head. With Daniel H away Noah bravely volunteered to take first dibs in goal and out he waddled in oversized kit and his fishing net ready for action ! Following a well observed minute’s applause in memory of Mick Hodgson, all the more poignant as two of his grandchildren, Charlie and Dyl, were playing in the game, and another, Drew, kindly refereeing for the first time.

We started the first quarter well, with Charlie opening the scoring for Mellor, almost as if it had been preordained. Charlie then fed Daniel R, who is usually seen in the football field on a Saturday morning, to get our second. Cam then got into the action with a nice solo goal following a good groundball, then Charlie again and Mellor were four up. The defence were standing strong with Noah performing well in net. Timperley got one back before another solo from Cam, who picked it up in his own half and drove to goal Ryan Giggs like (vs Arsenal, although without the hairy chest) to score, making it 5 - 1 after Q1.

As sometimes happens with the boys, a fantastic first quarter was followed by a disappointing second. Timperley came back into the game although Mellor scored first with Miles supplying Leo from face off. Timp then got two before Miles again the provider to Daniel R from face off to make it 7 - 3. Charlie got another before Ollie got on the scoresheet, unfortunately in the wrong goal following a tussle with a Timperley player. Timp got another and it was 8 - 5 at half time, with Timp having won the second quarter.

However with Timperley tiring in the second half that was to be the last time they scored in the match. Leo replaces Noah in net, and strong checks from Ollie and good groundball from Jacob meant they just couldn’t break through. We scored six unanswered goals in Q3 with some excellent team lacrosse. Cam fed Dyl to score, then Miles as provider again to Dyl for his second. Not to be outdone by his brother Charlie scores again before what must be goal of the day (or even season?) from Dyl as he switched hands to shoot and score his third. Cam then scored again before Miles assisted in yet another, this time to Charlie to make it 14 - 5 after Q3.

Charlie in net for the fourth quarter and two more goals from Mellor as Miles provided his fifth assist of the game for Daniel to score, then Daniel fed Leo to make it Mellor 16 Timperley 5. Apart from Q2 Mellor had dominated the game with some well worked lacrosse goals and strong defence. A great team performance but some notable performances from Mick’s grandsons, Charlie and Dyl, who played magnificently in his memory, Miles, fantastic at face off and feeding the attack, in particular Daniel R who was superb in only his second game of the season . Credit to Timperley for playing the game in good spirit and particularly well done to their keeper, who had a great game.
