A game of 2 halves for the U14s against Brooklands
By Martin Mochan
Good natured tussle with some good talent on show from both sides
On a cold wet morning in Mellor, the boys met Brooklands for the second time this season. After our defeat against Stockport the previous week, we were looking to get back our winning ways! George won the first face off and Mellor started well, peppering the opposition goal, but couldn’t find the net, until half way through the first quarter when Josh broke the deadlock. This was followed by a good response from Brooklands who scored almost immediately. A long clearance into the air by Ned, found George’s stick and a great soul effort from him put Mellor in front again. Another goal from Josh, a couple from Jack Royle and one from Jamie saw Mellor end the first quarter 6-1 in front.
The second quarter started with Brooklands number 11 causing us problems, but great goal-keeping by Ned helped Mellor keep the advantage. Ollie Plant was showing great spirit in mid-field, making some great runs. The Mellor defence were also helping to keep Brookland’s attackers at bay! Mellor scored another 4 goals in this quarter, whilst Brooklands only managed to get one past Ned, with the quarter ending Mellor 10 Brooklands 2.
The Coaches mixed things up for the start of the third quarter with both George and Jamie donning Brookland’s shirts in an attempt to even things up in terms of squad sizes. Brooklands started to put the pressure on Mellor, scoring 3 goals in this quarter. Mellor responded well, scoring 3 themselves, one of which came after Ned wrestled with 3 Brooklands players for the ball, fed a long ball to Noah, who assisted Jack Royle to score a great goal. The last quarter ended with Mellor 13, Brooklands 5.
Some great sportsmanship by both teams, made this a pleasurable game to watch for the spectators. Both Mellor and Brooklands both scored 3 in the last quarter and a good game ended with Mellor winning 16-8.
