Reserves & A’s move leagues.

Social media Manager8 Jun 2023 - 07:35

Big changes at the club.

Reserves and A’s move leagues.

After a 21 year association with the Bristol & District league & a 16 year association with the Bristol Premier Combination league.
We have decided to move our Reserves & A’s for a lateral move to the Bristol & Suburban league.

Our first team first joined the Bristol & District division 3 back in the 2002/03 season leapfrogging Div 6 / 5 & 4. And gaining promotion through the old pyramid promotion system.
We were allowed to join at District 3 level after spending our first two years as a club in the now disbanded Bristol & Avon Leagues. Winning promotion from the B&A Div 1 as runners up , and then following that up by winning B&A Premier Division.
We rapidly gained promotions to the Bristol Premier Combination league via the District leagues , picking up the District 3 league title & Runners up in District 2 , District 1 & the Senior Division.
But it was the Bristol Premier Combination where we had our most success.
We won the Bristol Combination Division 1 at our first attempt. Following it up with debut Combination Premier title. The club won 7 combination league titles ( 6 x prem , 1 x Combination 1 ) 2 x combination cups & 1 x GFA senior cup in the space of 9 years. We became the first ever Bristol Premier Combination side to win the Prem Division , Prem Cup & GFA senior cup treble. And winning the Premier Division more times than any other club in the history of the league. Something we are immensely proud of.
We also represented the league 5 x in the Steve Tucker Cup final at Frys , where the Combination league champions take on the Suburban Premier Champions. We won this cup 4 times.

The reserves followed suit. Joining the Bristol & District league from the Bristol & Avon league in 2008.
The Reserves gained runners up medals in District 3 & 2. And getting promoted in 3rd place from Div 1 to the senior Division.
The A’s started off in the bottom District league. Climbing all the way to Division 2 grabbing a few runners up & 3rd place promotions.

The Reserves finally joined the Combination league Division 1 after a league restructure filling in a vacancy following on from the Covid period. By then the first team were finally at County level.

We cannot thank the Bristol & District and the Bristol Combination leagues enough for allowing us to join their leagues and grow our club.
The club enjoyed great success. Have some great memory’s and created our reputation within these leagues.

We dealt with some great people over the years within these leagues Including the current committee members.
Some of the following were quite hands on in helping us with our progress especially in our early years. Sometimes it wasn’t always kind words , but it was words that were probably needed and being a young club at the time we got put in our place on more than one occasion ! But we believe this helped shape us.

Unfortunately not all of the following people are with us now.
Vernon Windell , Ray Bean , Pat Sice , Kevin Wilkinson , Chris Lucker , Richard Monks.
All of these people helped us massively. As stated , especially in our early years when the club was run top to bottom by people who were only in their early twenties.

Over the years two of our very own club secretaries were invited on to the league management committees of both the Bristol & District & Bristol Premier Combination. Former secretary Andy Phipps. And our current secretary Mark Smith. Mark also winning secretary of the year in 2016.

Another important part of our early years was Dave Hughes of the Evening post. He was a life member of the District & combination leagues. He covered the Combination leagues & district league sections in the paper before social media was so big , and when everyone used to buy the paper to search for results & write ups. He gave us some great exposure with a lot of brilliant headlines. Helping us forge a name amongst much more established clubs at that time.

But after all these years we have decided to move on to pastures new.
The logistics of helping run the Filwood Fields played a big part in our decision to move leagues.
We have no fewer than 4 adult Saturday clubs that play at Filwood Fields. ( Mendip Broadwalk , Broadplaine , Hartcliffe FC , Supreme Sports ).
These 4 clubs including ourselves had 8 teams between us spanning 4 different leagues. ( The Bristol Suburban , The Bristol & District , The Premier Combination & Somerset County League).
5 of the teams are already in the Suburban league.
By adding our Res’s & A’s to the Suburban league this will make the fixtures much more practical to work with. And make life much easier for our ever busy Filwood Fields pitch coordinator. And our own club fixture secretary.
This now means all sides - apart from our 1st team will play within the Bristol & Suburban league structure.

Again a massive thanks to all at the Bristol Premier Combination league & the Bristol & District league for being so understanding.

And a big thank you to the Bristol & Suburban league for allowing us to join their leagues. We hope the move will be a successful one.

We move on to the next chapter.
