Blues beaten on the road

Lucas Flanders26 Jan - 19:43

The search for a league win in 2025 continues…

Following their undeserved 5-1 defeat at Kingstonian in their previous game Met travelled to Leatherhead to face yet another of the League’s stronger teams who harbour serious promotion ambitions. Despite recent weather the pitch held up very well to provide an entertaining game for the 477 supporters in attendance.

Following a bright start by the home team it was the Met who had the best early chance when on 17 minutes Sid Gbla’s shot from close quarters went wide following a long throw from Ryan Davey. But on 23 minutes the home side went ahead to a spectacular 25 yard drive from Bartlett-Antwi as the Met defence retreated to the edge of their penalty area. The same player then drove a fierce shot against Met keeper Liam Beach which fell safely to be cleared from the danger zone. Despite Leatherhead having gained the upper hand Met continued to press and on 32 minutes were awarded a penalty after Gbla was dragged down. Following a long delay for treatment to the offending player Louis Degand stepped up confidently to drive the ball home and for Met to go in at half time with the scores level.

The home side began the second half brightly and it was not long before Beach was forced into making a couple of regulation saves. Then for 10 minutes Met had the best of it with Jamal Sharpe’s pace causing problems, Degand forcing a sharp save from the home keeper and Laurence Ernest hitting the side netting following a 50 yard driving run.

But on 64 minutes, with the game very open, a quick fire three pass movement cut through the Met defence with Brisset finishing smartly from 12 yards to put Leatherhead in front. Despite Beach being forced to make another very sharp save Met did not buckle and earned just reward on 83 minutes when they were awarded a penalty following a hand ball. Louis Degand stepped up to repeat his earlier effort and bring the scores level. Heartbreak followed shortly after when on 88 minutes a lofted pass from Kavanagh eluded every player in a crowded box and drifted in at the far post despite a despairing dive from Beach who was unable to get a hand to it.

So an uplifting performance from Met went unrewarded leaving them to sink into the bottom 4 on goal difference.
