Defeat to Norwich for a second time

Plantation Park has not been the happiest of hunting grounds for Mildenhall Town in recent days.

After losing to Norwich United 3-2 in the FA Cup on Saturday, Mildenhall followed that up on Tuesday with another defeat against the same opposition in the league - this time 2-0.

Truth be told it was far from a great spectacle with both sides finding it tough to string together passes at times and neither goalkeeper particularly over-worked.

Yet, it was Norwich that made it count when it mattered and they broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. Haydn Davis' free-kick from the right was met by the head of Alby Matthews and the ball drifted inside the far post.

It took until the 48th minute for Mildenhall to register their first meaningful effort on target as captain Luke Butcher swiveled inside the box, but his shot was straight at Norwich goalkeeper Ryan Dickerson.

It was an improved second half performance from Mildenhall, although it was still tough going when it came to creating chances of note.

Tanner Call had their next best attempt in the 78th minute when he found some space just outside the box and forced Dickerson to tip the ball away down low to his left.

However, the outcome was settled in the 83rd minute with the one bit of genuine quality in the whole match. Matthews cut in from the left and from 25-30 yards out he unleashed a shot that flew into the top corner of the net.

Mildenhall are away again on Friday night at Ely City in the FA Vase - Kick Off - 7:45pm.
