Sr Blues 2nd XV Drop Home Opener to Bay Street Pigs
By John Amos
Mississauga Blues Sr Men 2nd XV 5 - 58 Bay Street Pigs 2nd XV
This was not the home opener the Blues were hoping for. The Bay Street Pigs selected a squad that probably out-weighed their opposites by almost 20 pounds at every position. They basically turned this contest into a game of keep-away, sending phase after phase at the young and gritty Blues. The Blues were fearless in contact but it was death by a thousand cuts as the Pigs picked up an extra 5 - 10 metres after every initial hit. The Pigs had their try bonus by the 24th minute and ended up with 7 by the half to take a 39-0 lead into the half. To the Blues' credit, they never gave up and they had the last say in this contest, scoring in the 64th minute to avoid being shut-out. Two Blues rookies figured in the try as new-comer Shiva Manickchand crashed over the line, taking a nice off-load from Nikita Kochnev after several phases from a tap-and-go penalty at the Pigs' 5m line.
The Blues will be looking to rebound next Saturday against the Toronto Dragons.
