Mold Alex Progress To Round 2

Mold Alex made it through to Round 2 after seeing off Llanberis in this seasons first Welsh Cup match at Alyn Park. Llanberis currently occupy a mid table position in the Welsh Alliance and travelled to Mold looking to dump the home side out of the cup after Mold's shaky start to the season. Luckily for Mold, the appointment of the new management double had happened just at the right time and Neil and Mike had managed to strengthen the side prior to this important clash. The match took on an unusual twist as the game was officiated by Referee Martin Williams, ably assisted by his son Geraint Williams and daughter Sian Williams........a first for football possibly? Answers on a postcard...

Llanberis could have taken the lead in the first minute but Steff Jones' weak shot at the back post was easily gathered by Mike Jones in the Mold goal. On 5 minutes Adam Hughes should've been booked for a challenge on Rhys Nash but he escaped without a caution. Three minutes later Mold were awarded a corner kick but the ball went long and drifted out for a goal kick. On 14 minutes a free kick was awarded against Alex Wetherby for holding Guto Llewelyn but luckily for Mold, the Llanberis free kick went just wide of the post. Four minutes later Andreas Economedies shot from 20 yards but the Llan keeper gathered well. Jamie Price made an unusual foray forward from his centre half position on 26 minutes and struck a sweet shot from 20 yards but the keeper managed to save. Two minutes later Llanberis were awarded a free kick but this time Guto Llewelyn's header went over the crossbar. On 30 minutes Mold took the lead after great work from Andreas Economedies on the left saw him side foot a defender and fire great shot into the bottom right hand corner. Although the keeper got down well and manage to get a glove to the ball, the shot was too strong and the ball squeezed into the net. Three minutes later Mold doubled their lead after a long ball forward from the defence found Lee Jones and he flicked the ball over the advancing keeper. On 35 minutes John Davies went down after an innocuous looking challenge and things initially looked bad for him. However, after treatment, he resumed the game with no lasting damage. Llanberis could've pulled one back on 38 minutes after Kevin Fraser was allowed a free header in the Mold box but the home tem were able to clear the danger. Mold went three ahead on the stroke of half-time thanks to Rhys Nash who curled the ball past the keeper from just inside the penalty box.

The second half was uneventful until the 53rd minute when the Mold keeper was judged to have held on to the ball for more than the 6 seconds allowed and was awarded a yellow card after kicking the ball away. On 57 minutes Mold were awarded a free kick for what appeared to be a perfectly timed Llanberis tackle. Unfortunately for Mold Abe Dobson could only strike the ball high over the crossbar. On 61 minutes Adam Hughes received a yellow card for Llanberis after he was adjudged to have pulled back Sam Richardso. On 64 minutes Mold should've made it four after Economedies set up Nash but his shot could only find the Llanberis crossbar. Mold didn't have long to wait however for their fourth and it was a great goal when it did arrive. Mold broke down the right and Lee Jones found Andrea's who scored with a side foot tap in. The Mold managers took this opportunity to make a double substitution Lee Jones being replaced by Josh Williams and Andreas Economedies being replaced by Matty Lewis. Mold went close on 70 minutes through Jamie Price but his header went over the crossbar. This was quickly followed by an effort from Rhys Nash who chipped the keeper only to see his effort headed off the line by a Llan defender. This was the last action of the game for Rhys Nash as he was replaced on 75 minutes by Joe Jones. Mold by now were playing exhibition football and at times Llanberis were chasing shadows as Mold stroked the ball around like professionals. The last chance of the game for Mold came in the 84th minute when Josh Williams found Sam Richardson and he beat the offside trap but couldn't beat the advancing keeper.
