Darren Fleary - Prop

Career :
Fleary was signed from First Division Keighley Cougars in July 1997 by Leeds Rhinos along with several other players including now coach Daryl Powell.

Fleary determination and hard worked earned him a place in the Rhinos Grand Final team in 1998, little over a year since joining the club as an virtual unknown.

Originally from Huddersfield, Fleary made 127 appearances for Leeds scoring five tries including appeares in that Grand Final in 1998 and the back-to-back Challenge Cup Finals in 1999 and 2000.

At the end of his first full season with Leeds in 1998, Darren earned a place in the Great Britain squad against New Zealand after impressing for Emerging England against Wales earlier in the summer. Darren missed out on the 1999 Great Britain side with a broken bone in his hand however he claimed a place in John Kear's England World Cup squad when he made 3 appearances.

2001 saw him gain recognition once again as he appeared for Yorkshire in the Origin game and was called into the Great Britain squad during the Ashes series.

Darren started out with his local amateur club Moldgreen ARLFC before signing for Dewsbury in September 1991. He made 26 starts and 9 substitute appearances scoring one try for the Rams before moving onto Keighley in July 1994.

In his three years at Cougar Park he made a further 82 starts and 3 substitute appearances scoring five tries.

In January 2003 he asked to be released from the final year of his contract at the Rhinos and returned to his home town club of Huddersfield Giants after their promotion into Super League.

After spending 4 years with the giants 2 of wich he was the club captain, Darren retired from playing.

In 2008 the Giants once again called on Darrens vast knowledge of the game and recruited him to become the junior academy coach.
