Molesey's fixture congestion caught up with them as their sixth game in thirteen days resulted in a 6-2 thumping at Sutton United in the quarter finals of the Surrey Senior Cup.

By Andrew Finch

Molesey had kept the hosts at arm’s length for half hour but fell behind to former Scotland international Paul Telfer's penalty, and conceded again on the stroke of half-time to Ronnel Dennis’ volley.

Nick White gave the Moles a glimmer of hope when veteran keeper Wayne Shaw spilled his long range effort and it crept into the net off a post, but within two minutes a hotly disputed penalty from Telfer restored Sutton's two goal advantage.

The Moles themselves were given a dubious penalty in the final ten minutes that Dean Thomas dispatched, but by that time they'd conceded a further three goals courtesy of Tom Jordan's close range effort and a well taken brace from Chris Benjamin.

Sutton fielded a combination of first team and reserves, with veterans Shaw, Telfer and ex Mole Steve McKimm adding some experience, but it was the youngsters that really caught the eye, with the pace, movement, mobility and work-rate of livewire front three of Benjamin, Dennis and Rhys Murrell-Williamson a constant thorn Moles’ side.

James Folkes missed a decent opportunity to open the scoring for the hosts when he volleyed high and wide after being set up by Dennis, Tom Dilloway cleared off the line following a scramble from a corner, and Jordan McCartney diverted a goal-bound effort from Murrell-Williamson over the bar.

The hosts opened the scoring when the Moles’ defence squandered a number of chances to clear and the ball was deflected to Dennis, who was tripped by Kristian Webb. Telfer sent Wester Young the wrong way from the spot.

The second arrived when Murrell-Williamson beat Dilloway to a high bouncing ball and combined with Nathan Daly to cross for Dennis to drive a volley into the ground that looped over the dive of Young and into the net.

Molesey needed a strong start to the second half and within five minutes they’d pulled a goal back when half-time substitute Joe Pratley-Jones played a quick free-kick to White 35 yards from goal.

White advanced five yards, and although his effort was well struck and bounced awkwardly in front of Shaw, the keeper was slow to get down and made a mess of the save, with the ball coming off the keeper’s glove and post before trickling over the line.

Controversy followed when Pratley-Jones was adjudged to have handled in the box when the ball clearly struck his chest to give the hosts another spot-kick. Telfer displayed no clemency, again sending Young the wrong way from the spot.

Number four arrived when the Moles switched off at a quick free-kick and Murrell-Williamson was left one on one with Andy Graves, and with acres of space to run into left the Molesey full-back for dead and cut the ball back for Jordan to poke home from close range.

Benjamin capitalised on a rare McCartney mistake to run through and slot beyond Young, and a sweeping move that started in the Sutton box was finished in the Molesey net within seconds as Daly and Kevin Serbony combined to put Benjamin through who lifted the ball over Young and in off the far post.

Despite the scoreline the Molesey players’ heads didn’t drop and when Dean Thomas’ thrown bounced in the box the ref adjudged the a hand had been used by Daly, and Thomas blasted the resulting spot kick past Shaw.

Shaw made up for his earlier error by making a cracking double save to keep out substitute Joe Grant as the Moles went hunting for a third, but despite the effort and work-rate can have no complaints about the final score against a ruthlessly efficient Sutton side who go on to face Chipstead of AFC Wimbledon in the semi finals.
