Moles FA Cup Dreams over at First Hurdle

Scott Todd '33
Dave Marvell '57
Matt Graves '76

Molesey went into their first home game since their opening day defeat to Horley looking to advance from the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup. Against them were Egham Town who Molesey know well and who would prove to be a major threat to the Moles hopes of advancing.

The Moles made one change to the team that beat Banstead seven days ago with Neremiah "Nemo" Adams coming in to replace Ross Chalke who was unavailable.

The Moles started well and for the first 20 minutes they dominated proceedings and created four good chances to put themselves in front.

Firstly, Sam Lampard had a long range effort tipped over the bar, then from the resulting corner Mannie Quarshie missed a totally free header and a golden chance to put the Moles in front.

Next, just after the quarter hour mark, Darius Heravi had a shot from the edge of the area parried away to safety.

Moleseys last chance of the half came after 20 minutes when Chris Ellis crossed a ball in from deep and Mannie Quarshie came within inches of turning it in at the far post.

But slowly Egham began working their way into the match and on the 33rd minute they hit the Moles with a sucker punch.

Egham won a corner and after the ball was swung in Wester Young was beaten in the air and as the ball fell Scott Todd, making his Egham debut, was on hand to thump it into the net.

Three minutes later Wester Young had a long range shot that needed tipping over the bar before the referee brought an end to the first half.

Those hoping that the Moles would come out for the second half with a renewed vigour initially thought their team would be battling to get back into it.

Sam Lampard got free of the last defender just seven minutes after into the second half but his effort bounced off of the post and out to safety.

but those early hopes were quickly extinguished when Dave Marvell easily scored after Ross White broke through two challenges too easily and double the visitors lead.

A minute later the Moles were lucky not to find themselves further behind after a ball was fired across goal and Marvell couldn't quite stretch enough to turn the ball in.

Molesey nearly got back into it in the 73rd minute when Charlie Muldowney had an effort turned on to the post but just a couple of minutes later The Moles were out of the match altogether.

It was a very simple goal for Egham as Ross White delivered a great cross that Matt Graves who had come on a few minutes before was able to finish.

Molesey had one last chance for a consolation goal when Marlon Rodney found space for a shot but his effort was blocked on the line.

Molesey are now out of the FA Cup and their next match is at home on Tuesday as they prepare to face Windsor.
