Lewis Ackerman's first goal of 2013 was enough for Molesey to end a winless run of four games with a 1-0 victory over Badshot Lea.

By Andrew Finch

The win was fully deserved against a Badshot Lea side who failed to register a single effort on target. Their attacking threat was summed up by Brad Smith's late free-kick in a promising position that flew over the bar and practically ended up in Thames Ditton.

With the sun making a rare appearance and minimal goalmouth opportunities the game had an end of season feel to it. Marcus Cousins fired either side of Wester Young's post in quick succession for the Baggies, and Smith hooked an effort over the bar from a tight angle, whilst for the Moles Joe Grant got on the end of a through ball played with Juan Mata-like precision from Matt Knight but saw his effort saved by the feet of Norris, and the same player headed a Joe Pratley-Jones free-kick wide.

The only goal of the game arrived after half an hour when Molesey's top scorer headed into an unguarded net after visiting keeper Jamie Norris flapped at a Tom Dilloway corner. The visitors will be particularly displeased with the manner in which they conceded as the corner was entirely preventable and came about through lack of communication between Norris and Darren Blake, who headed past the keeper and out of play without a Molesey player in sight.

Norris has apparently opted for finish the season with Badshot Lea rather than parent club Farnborough, meaning that the Blue Square South side had to field an outfield player in goal in their game against Staines Town, and despite his mistake for the goal his huge kicking had the potential to cause Molesey problems at the back, particularly in light of the missing Kristian Webb, Moses Spencer and Jordan McCartney meant that the Moles were lacking height.

However, both Andy Graves and recent signing Colin Hartburn defended magnificently, and limited the visitors to mainly half chances all afternoon. Their main threat came from the left foot of Josh Pearson, whose set piece deliveries caused the home defence several anxious moments.

The second half begun with the excellent Nick White having an effort cleared off the line, whilst the quick feet of Joe Grant nearly caught Norris out at his near post.

As the visitors pushed for an equaliser the Moles were guilty of sitting too deep and inviting pressure on themselves, but the Baggies' shooting remained wayward, with Young seemingly spending more time jogging behind his goal to retrieve off-target shots than in his goal waiting to stop them.

The Moles were denied a clear penalty in the closing stages when substitute Peter Song was hacked down in the box by Jamie Hoppitt. The ref, who otherwise had a fine game, looked to his better placed assistant who ruled that no contact had been made.

The win means that Molesey have three wins and three clean sheets over the Baggies this season. They face midweek games against Hanworth Villa and Westfield before travelling to South Park next Saturday.
