Formed in 1916 as a junior team Monton Amateurs AFC soon became an open age club playing on public pitches. After a history of many changes, the Club moved to the present 10 acre site in Winton ( City of Salford ). The site was largely undeveloped and in a run-down condition, but was seen to have potential for development. In particular it offered the opportunity to expand and diversify the club's activities to include organised football and coaching for local young people.
Since takeover considerable ground development has been carried out, including the construction of four new grassed pitches with underground pipework drainage, the provision of a grassed training area and a new access road.
In July 2016 a new Clubhouse, built to take the place of the previous one destroyed by vandals, was opened and further developments are planned including upgrading the playing pitches and floodlighting the car park.
In season 2016/17 the Club is operating two open age teams in the Manchester League, a veterans team and sixteen junior teams with an age range from Under 7`s to Under 15`s and a Soccer School operating all year round for 4 to 6 year old young people. This involves over 200 playing members and over 50 team managers, coaches and support staff, all volunteers.
The Club has already developed strong connections with the local community and the current Club development plan calls for these to be increased.
In 2011 the Club changed its constitution to that of a Company Limited by Guarantee as AFC Monton Ltd with its objective to promote community participation in Amateur Football and to provide facilities for playing football together with related social facilities and in 2015 became a Community Benefit Society.
