Manchester FA Veterans Cup quarter final

AFC Monton hosted local rivals Deans Youth and Ladies Veterans for this Manchester FA Veterans Cup quarter final and eventually made progress into the semi finals of this prestigious competition.
With several players unavailable on the day this was going to be a stern test for the Ammies but they rose to the occasion and produced a gritty, solid squad performance. Monton took an early lead through skipper Craig Buckley with a cute finish but then somehow managed to miss several goalscoring chances to seal the result early on and this gave the visitors hope even though the Ammies goalkeeper was simply a bystander for all of the first half, never having a save to make.
The second half saw Deans put in more effort and they had plenty of the ball but still could not produce a single goalworthy shot until the sixtieth minute when they finally managed an effort on goal which somehow slipped in to level the scores.
Monton were still creating good goalscoring chances but could not find the vital touch to win the game and both sides faced a penalty shoot out.
The Ammies keeper, Robert Wrigley produced two saves to keep Deans out and Monton scored their first two penalties, Deans then scored and Monton scored again to take a 3-1 lead. Drama was to follow as a Deans player needed to score his penalty but hit the post to send the Ammies into the semi final.
