MONTROSE ROSELEA V DEVERONSIDE
MCBOOKIE.COM NORTH SUPERLEAGUE
SAT 16TH OCT 2021

Roselea on the back of two home wins were looking to make it three on a row when Deveronside came to Links Park for the second week running. The visitors put on a good show in the Quest Cup match going down 2-0 but caused Roselea problems. That was on the back of a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Culter so they were looking to go one better this time. Roselea began the day in 9th place sandwiched between 6 teams with a small number of points separating them so a win would be useful against the bottom side in the League. Roselea were still missing suspended Calum Watson & Blair Stephen and long term injured Jordan Harrison, Connor Mitchell & Callum Rae.

Roselea: McCormack, Davidson, Soutar, Taylor, Reoch, McDonald, Beedie, Bailey, Thomson, Greig & Alberts. Subs: Garnham, Gill, Jamieson, Robertson, Watson & Tweed

Roselea started well and won a free kick on the left. Deveronside left a big gap at the front post area and although Bailey connected with Thomsons low ball he couldn’t direct it goalbound.
In 8 minutes Greig whipped a great ball across the face of the goal and three Roselea players were a whisker away from contact.
It was all Roselea early on but they were going to have to start converting their chances to make the superiority count. Bailey had another chance in 15 minutes when he connected with an Alberts head flick but was again thwarted by the visiting keeper Sutherland.
These chances were to cost Roselea and Deveronside took the lead with a great goal. DUIGUID tackled Davidson just outside the centre circle and spotted McCormack off his line and sent a perfect strike over his head from 35 yards to open the scoring.
Roselea looked to get back into the game and despite Greig and Bailey getting into good positions they could not break down the visitors defence and keeper Sutherland also had a couple of good saves.
Beedie nearly got the equaliser when he went on a run beating two players and his left footed drive was just outside of the upright in 42 minutes.
The ever dangerous Duiguid had the last chance of the half when he cut in and his left footed drive was easily held by McCormack.

HT Montrose Roselea 0 Deveronside 1

Roselea came out in determined fashion however the first 20 minutes of the half did not see either team really create much in the way of openings. Greig threatened a couple of times but his finishing lacked conviction and never really threatened.
In 66 minutes Greig broke down the right and his cross again flashed across the face of the goal with no takers.
The game turned on its head in the 70th minute. Matheson cut inside and chipped McCormack who managed to get a touch on the ball and when it came down off the bar there was a scramble on the line that Soutar managed to clear.
Roselea sprung into action and sub Garnham turned in the box before laying the ball back to Thomson but his shot was well blocked.
In 73 minutes Roselea finally got the breakthrough and it was created by a great rund and right footed cross from Thomson which GARNHAM greatfully accepted and scored with a low shot into the net.
Roselea went ahead in the 76 minutes with a great overhead kick from Liam BAILEY when the ball broke to him in the box.
It went from bad to worse for Deveronside when Roselea were awarded a needless penalty when Greig was pushed in the box going for a header when there was no danger. ALBERTs took the kick and smashed the ball past Sutherland in 81 minutes.
Roselea sent on Jamieson for Alberts and Gill for Davidson with the game now won.
Roselea made it 4 in 86 minutes when GARNHAM grabbed his second of the game with another good finish.

FT Montrose Roselea 4 Deveronside 1

This ended up looking an easy win for the home side but the truth is they made hard work of it. Had they taken some of the early chances then it could have been far easier. Deveronside did not look like a team rooted to the bottom of the League and they should get a lift from their two performances at Montrose and kick on with a good run of games coming up. The win lifts Roselea into 8th position in the League and they have a couple of games in hand over Banchory and East End who lie in 5th and 6th positions.
Next week Roselea travel to Hermes in the North Regional Cup and will want to put in a better performance than they did in their last visit when they went down 8-1 in the League. Blair Stephen & Calum Watson will return from suspension. Kick off is at 2pm
