Moorends Thorne Marauders underlined their credentials with a convincing away win at Bottom of the table Linley Swifts (Huddersfield) to record their third straight league win.

Moorends had to withstand tremendous pressure from the home side who dominated the territory in the first 40 minutes by using the slope and elements to their advantage.

Moorends defence held firm and displayed their speed and resilience when Chris Allen spread the ball wide to his brother Steve who broke the home defence before sending Adam Pickles on a 50 metre gallop to the try line, Shaun Roberts adding the conversion, 0 – 6.

Moorends had to withstand a further ten minute onslaught before they managed to break the Swifts again, Chris Allen again proving to be the inspiration as he strode through the home defence on the half way line before turning the ball back inside to Mark Roach who’s supporting roll saw him striding over for a try converted by Shaun Roberts, 0 – 12.

Linley Swifts were rewarded on 24 minutes for their determined display, from the kick-off they re-gathered the short kick-off and caught Moorends flat footed as they quickly moved the ball through their dangerous half-backs to send the loose-forward over in the corner for a unconverted try, 4 – 12.

The Marauders pre-season training started to tell in the last ten minutes of the half, smart work by Roberts saw the young half-back slice through the home defence only to be denied ten metres short, his quick play the ball allowed David Chowings to move the ball quickly to the left, Steve Allen turned the ball back inside to Chris Allen who found Shaun Roberts with a lovely short ball to allow the young half-back to glide over for a try converted by David Chowings, 4 – 18

From the kick-off Shaun Roberts again sliced straight through the home defence to race 60 metres before off-loading to Alex Palmer, Palmer carried the ball into the in gaol area before unselfishly passing back to Roberts to gain the glory, David Chowings adding the extras, 4 – 24

Half-Time; Linley Swifts 4 – 24 Moorends Thorne Marauders

The Marauders showed no mercy as they took the game to the Swifts and with the advantages in their favour they soon recorded their first points of the second-half, Chris Allen made an half break before sending his brother Steve on a defence drawing run, the big centre took all the attention from his team mates before sending David Chowings over between the posts, Shaun Roberts converting. 4 – 30

Linley Swifts responded in tremendous fashion but all their efforts met a solid well drilled Marauders defence, the visitors where unlucky on a few occasions when the referee judged the ball to have gone forward but they also added to it themselves by poor ball distribution at vital times.

A typical Chris Allen show and go solo effort resulted in Moorends extending their lead after a long spell of dominance, Shaun Roberts adding the conversion, 4 – 36

Moorends final score came on the 75th minute and was probably the luckiest of the day, a poor ball found the ground with the line begging, second-rower Alex Palmer hacked the ball into the in goal area and his pace allowed him to win the foot race for a try converted by Roberts, 4 – 42
