Morley's second half performance might even bring a smile to their coaches!
Morley's 5 try effort on Saturday was the first time they had scored more than 3 tries and with a little more concentration and patience it could have been more.
The afternoon started normally as one of Morley's starting line-up, Brandon Hannam, reported injured and coaches Colin Stephens and Mark Burrow had to re-arrange their team.
Nick Green was moved from 6 to 8. Alan Brown should have been making his debut with a gentle introduction from the bench, but was thrust into the hurley-burley of league rugby in the back row from the start and Jack Price was named as replacement. Tom Wall was also drafted into the team after a long absence.
Morley played into the strong wind in the first half as Driffield kicked off towards Scatcherd Lane. Powerful breaks from wing Johnnie Graham and back row Alan Brown showed glimpses of what was to come, but valiant and at times desperate defence by Driffield prevented tries.
A try went begging after only 3 minutes from Graham's initial burst and when Driffield went
outside the laws to prevent Morley's progress following Brown's run, Isherwood calmly slotted Morley's first points with a penalty on 17 minutes. A second penalty followed on 21 minutes as Driffield struggled to cope with Morley's varied attacking options and Morley went into a 6-0 lead.
After 30 minutes of Morley dominance there followed a spell when Driffield gained possession and caused problems for Morley. All Morley's pressure had only brought 6 points and Driffield showed how to convert pressure into points. Morley were surprised and slow to re-act when they were penalised as they pushed Driffield off their own ball in an attacking scrum 10 m from the Morley line. Scrum half Robinson took a quick tap penalty and the supporting No. 8, Adam Brankley went over to score the game's first try. Watts' conversion put Driffield into an unlikely 7-6 lead and only a last ditch tackle by Isherwood saved Morley further embarrassment as fullback Jackson made a superb run form defence just before halftime.
The words of "encouragement" from their half time team talk had the desired effect and Morley began to put in a more thoughtful and patient performance on the restart.
Morley thought they had scored from a fine forward maul but the referee decided Greg Jones had been held up. A 5 metre scrum followed and Morley pounded the Driffield line as Green, Shannon and Percival tried to break through. It was left to prop Greg Jones to show them the path as he burrowed his way under the Driffield pack to score. Isherwood added the simple conversion and Morley were back in front 13 - 7 after 44 minutes.
Driffield did try to come back but a loose pass gave Jones a chance to intercept only 60 metres from the line. His grubber kick set up Harrison Baylis who hacked on for the ball just to elude brother Luke as it went slowly over the dead ball line.
Luke was soon back in action as following a good break from Isherwood, he harried the opposition into making an error and Greg Jones was on hand to pick up and go over in the corner from 5 metres to claim his second try. Isherwood could not convert from the touchline line but Morley had extended the gap to 18 - 7 on 49 minutes.
Morley continued to press and Scatcherd Lane was treated to one of Chester's party tricks when he sent Isherwood clear to go over the line with a through-the-legs pass. However, the referee, who had a fine game, was not impressed and he deemed it a forward pass.
Chester did have the final word when he sneaked over for a try of his own on 63 minutes to a rousing cheer from the Scatcherd Lane faithful.
This was followed by the best try of the game when from the re-start, Isherwood broke through the defence on the right. Andy Ellis took on the ball and completely bamboozled the remaining defenders with an inch perfect reverse pass to Johnnie Graham who scorched over from half way to claim his first try of the game and the team's first bonus point try of the season.
Morley wrapped up the scoring on 72 minutes when a straight forward passing movement was turned into an attacking opportunity by replacement back row Jack Price as he went round the Driffield wing. His pass gave Graham just enough space for him to go over despite the attentions of the Driffield defence. Isherwood converted both Graham's tries as Morley eased to a 39 - 7 victory.
Next week sees Morley take a rest from the rigours of league rugby when they take on National 2 North Huddersfield RUFC at Scatcherd Lane. Kick-off is 3.00pm and being a Yorkshire Cup game, admission is £3.00 for all spectators.
