U10s development continues

After two hectic weekend festivals it was comforting to be back close to home in Cleckheaton. A squad of 13 travelled the short distance to our neighbours, with the team including Kieran Knudsen, who made a terrific return after a 12-month layoff following a nasty injury and Lui Shivtiel playing in only his second club rugby match.

Morley gave a dominant, organised display in attack, moving quick ball to the flanks for wingers Jack Coates, Will Kinder, James Binney and Owen Newsome to score. Jamie Silkstone and Joe Frain formed a promising half back partnership which saw both players use creative footwork to make space for their own tries and for Lui and Luke Hutchinson.

Hard work on the winter training ground was evident as the Morley defensive line held strong and line speed was consistent to close down the Cleckheaton attacks. The most improved area was in player decision-making at the ruck – whether to leave and defend or turn over or clear out. Intelligent play here from forwards Joe Stead, Joe Pyett and Archie Horsfield provided solid possession with Jack Briggs giving the backs some respite with his familiar speedy breaks from the base of the ruck.

All in all, a great performance as many aspects of the coaching sessions are now being repeated in a match situation. Excitement is really beginning to build for the end of season tour to Darlington.

Thanks goes to a Cleckheaton team who remained steadfast and resilient throughout and to the referee who allowed the game to flow. We look forward to returning the hospitality next season.

Up the Maroons.
