Morton lose league opener on The Meadows

New skipper Andy Jones won the toss and elected to bat on a bright but breezy day in Edinburgh. Openers Jones and Cunningham made a steady start against an accurate Wanderers attack on an, as usual tricky Meadows wicket. Cunningham was the first to go for 12 when the score was 26 trapped lbw to Neil Westgarth, but with both oppening bowlers off and plenty attacking batting to come it was areasonable start. Unfortunatele Jones went soon after with no addition to the score and although various othe batsmen got in no one was able to kick on to a big score Nathan with 20 and Steve Carney with 25 were the best of the rest. The innings ended 1.1 over short of the alloted 45 for 104. The feeling at tea was that we might be 20 or so short.
The Wanderers innings got off to a sensational start when Pete Westgarth chased a wide delivary outside off stump and was brilliently caught at backward point by Vas. That brought Sam brenkle to the wicket and the young Wanderers bat went on to play a match winning innings of 68 not out and guide his side passed Morton's total with 12.2 overs to spare. Mention should also be made of Wanderers Skipper Neil Westgarth who walked to a very thin edge to the keeper. good to see the wanderers skip lead by example
Morton will take a lot of plus points fropm the day. If Steve Carney hadn't pcked up a groin srain whle batting and been unable to bowl it may have made a difference but well done Dunfermline.
