Moseley set off bright and early for their 150 mile trip to Wymondshnamhamshireland (pronounced 'Windum') for a game we knew would be very competitive.
From Wasps kick off we saw the strong players coming forward and dominating possession for the home team, winning the ball back quickly and camping out in our 22 for the first part of the game, but they could not break through Moseley's strong defence, centres Rosa and Liss worked extremely well together putting in big hits. After a few phases of play we managed to turn over the ball and ship it straight out to fullback Ruth who ran the entire length of the pitch to put Moseley's first of four tries on the scoreboard.
Wasps came back strong, with 2 of their players teaming up and absolutely smashing one of our flankers (R.I.P internal organs) and scored which went converted to edge them ahead, but this was short-lived after the referee had to talk with the captains about persistent offsides from both teams and a Wasps player was caught out a few minutes later and yellow carded. Moseley exploited this overlap with another impressive try from our fast-paced Ruth to run around the Wasps defence and score in the corner, putting us ahead into half time 7-10 ahead.
Shortly after half time quick-thinking scrum half Mel took a quick-tap penalty 5 metres from our tryline and scored to push us even further ahead, the scoreline now 7-15. After the restart it was our turn to be punished with an offside infringement and a yellow card for winger Emma. Wasps were back to a full compliment and scored (converted) bringing the opposition within 1 point of us, 14-15.
Squeaky bum time for Moseley not wanting to get back on the long coach journey with a loss we pulled ourselves together and once we were back to a full 15 we kept possession well, supporting each other and communicating efficiently to get the ball back out wide and found the hands of fullback Ruth, who ran 60 metres to be almost decapitated from a high tackle by her opposing fullback who was immediately yellow carded and gifted us a penalty try in the process. Thankfully Ruth was ok and got back to her feet after a short assessment. Wasps couldn't recover from this latest offence and back on the rampage fullback Ruth managed to dot down her fourth try of the game.
At the restart Moseley had a minute and a half to maintain possession and win the game, but being turned over early on we didn't panic (well, maybe a bit... ok we absolutely panicked!) and Wasps pushed us back into our own 22 looking for a fierce come back before the full time whistle, but forward of the match Boe along with some of her forward pals turned the ball back to their side, and flanker Clare kicking the ball out of play to end the game, and thankfully, not kicking it directly into centre Rosa's face (but it was close!).
Special mentions to Hannah Bussey at 10 who controlled the game extremely well and taking those late hits like a pro and not crying once. Back of the match Rosa at 12 who impressed everyone with her strength, control and awareness for the full 80 minutes. Flanker Boe for her solid defence and commitment to put her body on the line for Moseley. Amy Rose for having a fantastic debut game. Emily for dying and coming back to life after a huge hit from a Wasps flanker and prop Louise for putting in great tackles around the breakdown to stop Wasps from gaining too much momentum.
