Melbourne 19-18 Moseley Oak

Oak’s winning streak ends Moseley Oak's winning run came to an end in a hard-fought game at Melbourne in muddy conditions.

Moseley had the brighter start and after some forward thrusts they were awarded a penalty which Gonzo Costa converted. Melbourne got a foothold in the Oak 22 not long afterwards and after repeated attempts up the middle were repelled, they spread the ball wide and finished well in the right corner.

Vasco Torres was in fine form for Oak and made a number of breaks in open play but could not find support and the chances were gone. However, after a couple of well- worked phases on the half-hour mark, Torres again got on the outside and fed Jamal Gask-Clarke who touched down. Costa converted and Moseley led 5-11 at half-time.

Melbourne had an excellent start to the second half when they kicked a 50 / 22 within thirty seconds and pinned Moseley Oak back on their own five-metre line. After good pressure and a couple of broken tackles, Melbourne scored and converted to take the lead.

To make matters worse, Moseley conceded a couple of penalties from the restart to once again find themselves near their own line. Moseley did turn over the Melbourne lineout but the clearance did not find touch and Melbourne attacked again but were held up. From the goal-line drop out, Melbourne continued to push forward but when a loose pass went over a player's head and looked as if it could be claimed by Oak, it bounced up perfectly for Melbourne's centre to run on to and touch down under the posts.

Now two scores down, Moseley continued to try and break the Melbourne line but they defended well and held firm. Moseley did have two good chances, but a Costa half break and pass was tapped backwards by a Melbourne hand and a Joe Farmer offload was intercepted.

Titch Thomas burrowed through to score with the final play of the game after Oak were awarded a couple of scrum penalties at the death, but it was too little and too late. Next up is Belgrave at home in the final league game of the season.
