Mossley Hill bounced back from the unfortunate defeat last week to Ramsey, to win 32-22 vs Ruskin Park.

After a tough game in the isle of man against top of the league Ramsey, Mossley Hill faced another tough task hosting Ruskin Park. Ths conditions were perfect and the home team were up for a big game needing the win and bonus point if possible.

The game kicked off and both teams were clearly up for a very physical game . The away team utilised their size and strength repeatedly running hard at the Mossley Hill lads who to be fair to them held their ground and made the tackles every time and had some big runs themselves from the likes of Jamie Byrne, Ste Birkett and Pat Powney. After a frantic start the ref gave Mossley a penalty inside the opposition twenty two which captain David Guest sent through the posts to take an early 3 point lead. This sequence was repeated with David Guest kicking all three early penalties making the score 9-0 and gave Mossley some breathing space .

With a points cushion Mossley were now able to settle into the game and start playing some decent rugby. Eventually the try deadlock was broken with the young and impressive winger Dan Wilkinson running in a try in the corner . The skipper missed the conversion so the score stood at 14-0. Mossley Hill was holding the big Ruskin runners and then when able breaking through the backs with some good hands and running lines. After being camped near the Ruskin try line number 8 David Guest was able to plough through the defending line to score the second try of the game . With the conversion missed the score stood at 19-0 and Mossley appeared to be cruising.

The tackles continued to be put in by Mossley Hill especially by the back row and centre Phil Cockburn. Peter Norbury and Andy Brown the flankers tackled everything that moved and some solid work at the breakdowns by Richard Dalton, Jamie Byrne and David Guest made things very hard for Ruskin to get a foothold in the game. A tackle by Rich Dalton followed by a big hit by David Guest saw the ball split and newcomer Andy Brown broke away running a try in from his own half . however Ruskin did manage to eventually break through and got 7 points on the board before half time .

The second half saw much of the same however a yellow card for the away team saw the game change as uncontested scrums took away one of Mossley Hills strengths with Alex Jones hooking brilliantly all game. This allowed Ruskin to creep back into the game claiming another 7 points. Score now 24-14.

Ruskin park continued to press during a spell of mistakes made by Mossley hill and closed the gap to just two points with another try and penalty making the score 24-22. Just as the game looked to be slipping away from the hard working home side John Whitaker went on one of his trade mark runs through the opposition defence and put winger Graeme Begg in for a well earned try returning the lead to 7 points . The last act of the game was a penalty kick by David Guest who sent it through the sticks to deny the opposition a bonus point. Final score Mossley Hill 32 Ruskin Park 22.

Great game and performance by all 16 players that were involved for the winning side . We wish Ruskin all the best and luck for the rest of the season and look forward to the return leg at their place. Man of the match for Mossley Hill was awarded to skipper David Guest by Ruskin Park .
