Millom Slay the Barbarians
By Ryan Carter
Millom made a barnstorming start to their season with a demolition of the Westmorland Barbarians.
A full-strength home side leant the visitors four players to make up their numbers, but still came out well on top.
Five tries in the first half and six in the second ensured they came out on top.
Straight from the kick-off Millom's Dion Atkinson took the ball to the visitors and made inroads into their half.
From the resulting ruck, second-rower Kieron Coulson picked the ball up and broke several tackles to cover 25 metres and score the first try with the conversion added by Robbie Pattinson.
Millom were quickly on the offensive again, with strong drives from their dominant forwards setting up Callum Loughran for a second try and a 12-0 lead.
The hosts continued to dominate in all areas, throwing the ball around and linking forwards and backs. On 20 minutes it was the backs who added to the score as Sy Robertson went over. Two quick tries were added just before half-time through Connor Sykes and Aaron Bradley as Millom built a 29-0 lead at the break.
The second half continued in much the same way and after good mauling work the forwards, Connor Penrith released inside centre Tyler French to go over for try number six, with fly-half Penrith converting.
Loughran went in for his second of the day and Jack Kendall - now playing at Hooker having previously featured at fly-half was the next scorer. With the game put to bed, Millom took their foot off the gas and received a wake up call as the visitors worked some good ball out wide to score in the corner.
This was all the hosts needed to kick back into gear, as three further tries came through Michael Kirkham, Sykes and Robertson. Atkinson was a deserved man of the match, after putting his body on the line everywhere on the pitch and showing fantastic strength going forward.
Coaches Paddy Loughran, Ian Cummings and Chris Park had nothing but praise for all 21 of their players. Loughran said " The game was played in a superb spirit". " We would like to thank Westmorland Ba Bas, who in phases showed some good attacking work - they just need to get their numbers to allow them to work together".
