Mungret Regional U14 girls continued their fine league form with a convincing 3-1 victory away to Regional United in Dooradoyle on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors dominated the first half of this match as they created several early chances with Katie Falahee, Amy O'Halloran and Sarah Prendergast all going close to scoring. The opening goal of match arrived in the 21st minute when Alisha Kelly broke the deadlock with a tremendous 30 yard strike. Mungret continued to dominate possession and scored a second goal on the stroke of half time when Alisha Kelly produced a fine cross from the right wing which evaded the home defence and Katie Falahee finished from close range for a 2 nil lead.
Regional started the second half positively and had the Mungret defence of Aoibhe, Katelyn, Rebecca and Lucy under pressure as they created a number of early chances. In the 51st minute the Regional right winger beat her marker and scored with a fine strike from 15 yards to reduce the deficit to the minimum. The goal gave the home team momentum as they continued to press forward and minutes later Sophie Lynch-Morata made a fine save in the Mungret goal. As Regional continued to press forward they were rewarded with a penalty in the 58th minute, fortunately for the visitors the Regional player struck the ball high and wide leaving the score at 2-1 to Mungret.
Mungret increased their momentum in the final 10 minutes and Lilly Griffin, Alisha Kelly and Sarah Prendergast began to dominate the home defence. A Mungret corner from the right caused chaos in the home defence as 3 successive shots were blocked before the ball was cleared.
Then on 66 minutes Mungret attacked down the left wing and when the ball was crossed into the penalty area Lilly Griffin was on hand to score from close range to extend the lead to 3-1. Minutes later the referee blew the full time whistle and the Mungret girls celebrated their hard fought victory.
