Reading FC re-joined the senior county cup competition this season, entering their Under-23 team.

They play in the Premier League Two, Second division, together with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Stoke City, Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion, Fulham, Norwich City and Sunderland.
They finished in 3rd position in their league, thereby gaining a promotion play-off position together with Southampton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa. The winners joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League Two Division One next term.

On Friday, 3rd May The Young Royals played Newcastle United at Madejski Stadium, Reading in their play-off semi-final. They were beaten 2 - 3 on penalties, after drawing the game 2 - 2 after extra time. Royals scored what looked like the winning goal in the 17th minute of time added, only for Newcastle to equalise in 120+1m from the penalty spot, thrn go on to win in the shoot-out.
