Slough Town picked up their first win of their 2019/2020 pre-season campaign after securing a 2-0 win at the SkyEx Community Stadium against Hayes & Yeading United.
Goals from Ben Harris and Ryan Bird clinched the win for the visitors.
Hayes & Yeading created chances but failed to challenge Rebel goalkeeper Jack Turner who had a quiet afternoon.
Slough Town looked full of energy creating plenty of chances, and felt they should have added more to their goal tally.
The visitors took the lead in the 40th minute after Warren Harris was brought down in the box leaving referee Neil Morrison with no choice but to point to the spot. Ben Harris stepped up for the Rebels and converted the penalty sending Andrew McCorkall the wrong way.
Slough’s second came in stoppage time at the very end of the game thanks to new signing Ryan Bird, who opened his account with the Rebels. Half time substitute Dan Roberts was found on the left flank and delivered a teasing cross which Bird met with a diving header to beat McCorkall with the last action of the game.
Ben Harris, Warren Harris and Max Worsfold kept the Hayes & Yeading defenders busy in the first 45 minutes after coming close to scoring on several occasions. Dan Roberts, who has had a brilliant pre-season so far, came close to scoring again. His effort in the 71st minute beat goalkeeper McCorkall but saw his shot meet the post and bounce away across the goal line leaving all Rebels supporters on their feet.
In the first half Bird, who started the game playing at centre back, was caught out in the 39th minute after he misjudged a header and left James Clark running on goal. He got away a shot but saw the ball run wide for a goal kick.
United’s best chance came eight minutes into the second half with Troy Timothy forcing goalkeeper Jack Turner to get down low and save his shot from close range.
Slough’s attacking trio of Ben Harris, Francis Amartey and Warren Harris caused many problems for the hosts inside the first 45 minutes. Ben Harris’s 38th minute free kick was inches away from beating McCorkall. Warren Harris was found in space from an Amartey cross, but his effort was fumbled and went high over the net.
Jon Underwood and Neil Baker used this game to move players around and give other more minutes. Scott Armsworth, a young defender from Fulham, replaced Warren Harris at half time allowing Bird to play 45 minutes up front. Worsfold moved back to left back and George Wells played 35 minutes at centre back to help the joint managers explore more options.
Joe Grant was introduced in the 60th minute but left the field ten minutes later after picking up an ankle injury, and was seen leaving the ground on crutches
