AFC Blackpool 0-0 Nelson (Nelson win 3-2 on Penalties)

The Admirals booked their place in the 2nd round of the Macron Cup last night, beating AFC Blackpool 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

The match went straight to penalties after 90 minutes when the score was tied at 0-0 in an entertaining affair however the Admirals held their nerve to beat Blackpool and will now face Prestwhich Heys at home in the next round.

Nelson handed a (second) debut to new signing Ash Brierley while Nathan Gibson who also joined the Blues last week was named as a substitute. Goalkeeper Dean Hardy returned from injury to start while the Admirals once again named a front two of Danny Mort, signed from Hurst Green, and Michael Hodson in the absence of Rodriguez and Patrick who were away with work commitments.

AFC Blackpool started the game stronger then Nelson who for the first 15 minutes struggled to get any rhythm to their play, both sides created a number of half chances. However the Blues settled down and began to play some good football, utilising the pace of Hodson and trickery of Mort to good effect. Keiran Lee had to come off midway through the first half due to injury and was replaced by Wolfenden. The former Accrington Stanley Youth player found himself free in the box but his header drifted harmlessly wide. Hodson came close to putting the Admirals ahead when the young Striker raced clear on goal poking the ball past the oncoming Goalkeeper but his touch took him wide of the goal and the chance was gone. Meanwhile a number of Blackpool crosses into the box forced Nelson into some last ditch defending, the Admirals backline held firm to ensure the hosts were kept at bay. By the end of the first half Nelson were on top and looked composed and confident on the ball, Danny Mort impressing in tight areas on a number of occasions however neither side could find a breakthrough.

Second half saw the Admirals pick up where they left off, creating a chance within the first minute. Nelson looked lively going forward and Wolfenden had a great chance to put the visitors a goal up, a ball into the box flicked on to the back post where the winger arrived but couldn't steer his header on target. Alex Mullin came close while Hodson and Mort both had chances however the Blues were having to work hard at the back to keep the hosts out of their box as the game opened up and became end to end at times. AFC Blackpool started to pressure the Admirals, Goalkeeper Dean Hardy called upon to make a number of good saves while Blackpool also wasted a number of good opportunities from close range freekicks.

Nathan Gibson came on for his debut replacing left back Jack Corcoran and the former Colne man showed why the Admirals have signed him with a good display on his first Blues outing. Brierley looked like he had never been away , winning his battles and showing his quality and determination to drive the Admirals to victory. As the game went into the last 10 minutes Nelson created a number of glorious chances to win the game, the best falling again to Wolfenden after a wonderful flowing move saw the ball fizzed across the 6 yard box from the left side, Wolfenden looked certain to score but his shot was somehow blocked on the line before the ball bounced back into the box.A fierce shot driven low looked to have sealed it for Nelson but the Blackpool Goalkeeper pulled of a stunning save to keep his side level and as the final whistle blew the game was to be decided by a shootout.

Nelson took the first penalty,Captain Steve Riley steeping up in front of some bloke with a drum behind the goal as the Blackpool faithful did their best to put him off. Their efforts worked as Riley's shot was well saved, before the hosts fired their first effort into the net putting them 1-0 up. Danny Mort cooly place his shot into the corner however Blackpool failed to convert their second spotkick , Hardy saving well to put the Blues level. Alex Mullin hammered Nelson's 3rd penalty into the bottom corner before Blackpool also grabbed their second. Michael Hodson then failed to hit the target giving advantage to the hosts however another good save from Hardy kept it all square going into the final penalties for both sides.Up stepped Sam Holt to smash the ball home for Nelson putting all the pressure on Blackpools final spotkick taker who blasted the ball over the bar to secure a win for the Admirals, who will now face Prestwich Heys in the next round.
