Welcome to Newburn Judo Club.
Newburn Judo Club was established in 1987 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The club has an open door policy where all are welcome regardless of ability, disability, gender or ethnic origin. We strive to develop an encouraging and positive environment for the children and young adults attending. The Club prides itself on promoting social interaction, friendship, respect, confidence, fairness and pride.

We would like to welcome your child to our club and provide you with some information about our activities. The club provides opportunities for young people between the ages of 5 and upwards to receive coaching and competition in Judo.
All coaching is by qualified coaches who are trained and have been screened for their suitability in working with young people.

The club has been accredited with Sport England's Clubmark, which is awarded to clubs by the British Judo association, when the club is able to demonstrate that it meets the BJA criteria as to playing programme, safeguarding and protecting children, sports equity and ethics and club management. Clubmark is an acknowledgement that we take these issues seriously and that we are striving to provide a high quality and welcoming environment for young participants in the sport.

Our club Welfare Officer, Karen Hadfield, is responsible for ensuring that our child protection policy is implemented, and can be contacted
Through the club secretary should you have any concerns.
We welcome parents to all training and competitions and value your support.

Our club trains at Newburn Activity Centre on Mondays and Thursdays at the following times:

Monday:
Kano Club (5-8 years) 4:15pm - 5:15pm
Red & Yellow belts 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Higher grades 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Seniors 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Thursday:
Kano Club (5-8 years) 4:15pm - 5:15pm
Red & yellow belts 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Higher grades 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Seniors 5:30pm - 7:00pm

Newburn encourages training and development of trainee coaches, who may also take sessions throughout the year.

Prices are £4.50 and are paid at the beginning of each training session.
Annual Membership can be obtained at the cost of £10.00 (till January 2016) and gives discount on mat fees.

Grading
Newburn Judo club is a member of the British Judo Association and follows their syllabus for grading and teaching.
Grading takes places during training sessions and cost £10 per grading.
You will be notified of each grading and asked to bring in your licence together with the BJA grading fee.
Each coloured belt has 3 grade points (Mon grades for juniors. Kyu grades for seniors) until you move up to the next belt, the sequence is as follows: White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown and Black.
To obtain the 1st Dan grade, points are awarded for winning competitive fights against higher graded opponents.

Competitions
Children from the age of 8 will be invited to take part in competitive events selected for their age and level of technique.
Consent Forms are given out detailing the event’s location, date and cost. Further information on competitions can be found on our website www.newburnjudo.org.uk and www.britishjudo.org.uk Consent forms need be returned by the date shown together with the entry fee and the administration team will sort out the entry forms. The club can on occasion supply a minibus to transport players and adults to competitions but this will incur a fee towards fuel and hire costs.
We ask that all children under the age of 16 are accompanied by an adult to competitions.
