For the second week running the wind played a part in the outcome of our game. In the first half we had the wind firmly against us and Jets used this well, pushing us back and passing well. They opened the scoring on 15 minutes. They added to their lead 3 minutes later but they weren't dominating. Arun at the back was immense. Lukas, who came on after 21 minutes, was again superb surging down the right hand side. He created a number of chances with good crosses and a couple of corners delivered perfectly into the 6 yard box. However we just couldn't break through. Just on half time Jets got a crucial third goal.
The second half was different. As expected, with the wind in our favour, we dominated possession and territory for the first 15 minutes. The Jets keeper was good and saved a few attempts. We fought hard and battled all over the pitch. It was a killer to go 4 down after 45 minutes against the run of play after competing so well but we didn't give up. Arun hit the target with a hard hit free kick but it was saved. Lukas, keeping his high work rate up, got on the end of a diagonal through ball only to see his shot on the run go just wide. As in the first half we saw a couple of those goal mouth scrambles but we just couldn't score. With three minutes to go, the hard working Jake got the ball onto his left foot and launched a hard shot at the Jets goal. The keeper couldn't hold it and the ever competitive Abdullah scored from the rebound.
Our team tried right up to the final whistle and their heart cannot be questioned. Jets were a good, strong team, who played a very good passing game. They had a lad who was about 6 feet tall who could launch a throw almost 40 yards and a kick even against the wind that could go deep into our half. Their left back was excellent so for Lukas to have beaten him quite a few times showed us how good Lukas is. However we need to concentrate on OUR game especially our passing game. We need to move the ball quickly through the team and also know when to release the ball to find a player in a better position as we move towards goal especially when our path to goal is blocked. We have to time our runs into the opponent's penalty area. This will all be worked on in training.
Our defence, commanded by Player of the Match Arun, fought Jets off well overall and Jake put a lot in not just attacking by creating so well but also coming back to help his defence with some strong challenges. We saw Captain Caleb get a smack in the mouth during a challenge in the first half, which initially knocked him off his stride, but he dug deep to soldier on. We can see that Leo can see a pass. I am encouraging him to sometimes look for the longer pass when it's on as when he is on the ball his short passing and decision making is very good. Majus came on for Leo just before half time and he got well stuck into his tackling. Pav and Saad had a tough day but I thought fought well. As they had their hands full defending we didn't see them get forward as much as last week. Max claimed the ball well and made some good saves. Abdullah started strongly in the middle of the park and on the left in the second half. He is always up for the challenge and plays on the edge using his emotions to drive himself on. Cameron, Ismael and Casian also worked hard on the wings for part of the game. Casian on the left was involved in some clever moves. Cam and Ismael are doing very well playing a year up. They are both finding their feet and confidence as each game passes. Stan, also playing up a year, is a clever player. He was involved in some good moves and worked really hard up front.
So our first defeat of the season but lots of positives to take from the game. lots of work to do as I know the next few games will be tough. But we have seen our team over the past couple of seasons up their levels to be competitive as they were yesterday. We win and we lose as a team and yesterday everyone fought right up to the final whistle. Credit to the boys.
