When we played Jets way back near the start of the season they were dominant and beat us deservedly 4-1. Sunday's match was a completely different story. Jets took the lead after 5 minutes from the penalty spot. It was well taken and gave Max absolutely no chance. For the rest of the first half we played well down both wings. Abs on the right and Caleb on the left. Caleb took on his defenders well. He was well supported by Pav who from left back linked well with Caleb and Jake playing CM. Stan was a danger up top but we never really had a clear cut chance in the first half. At half time we came in and knew we had done OK as we had played the whole half against the wind and was still well in the game.
During the second half we dominated with Jets restricted to the odd break away. On those occasions we saw our team defend well all through the team. Everyone was working hard and conscious of the ref who was blowing up for the slightest touch. We make crucial tackles making sure not to give away a foul. Pav made a couple of brilliant last ditch tackles stopping good chances. Near the end as we committed more players forward to try and get the equaliser we were leaving gaps at the back and that was when Max made a double save from point blank range which was truly World Class. As usual (but never taken for granted) Max also distributed the ball so well. Saad was great too and I could see he could really be effective if we pushed him forward more. Majus came on at right back to allow Saad to be more attacking. Majus used his defensive skills and blistering speed well against the fast Jets attackers. Near the end Saad combined well with Caleb creating a great chance. He put Caleb in after some good work outside the Jets area. Caleb shot and it spun to Saad who just wasn't able to stick the chance in the net but we were cutting through the Jets defence like a knife through butter. Just before that Stan showed his class as he received the ball centrally just inside the Jets half. He dribbled past 3 players into the area and got a great shot away which was just saved by the keeper. Really close to getting a brilliant goal. Jake had created well, always looking to use the ball intelligently. Cameron and Ismael had come on during the game on the wings and put in a shift. Arun captained the team and again was crucial to our defence. Caleb's feet were lightening fast as he regularly beat good defenders. Saad's clever play on the right wing was really good. I will be looking to use him there in the last few games of the season when it is right for the team.
It was disappointing not to get a draw or even a win from this game as we would have deserved it. Jets were continually taking goal kicks or drop kicks that were going straight down the middle but we did not make the most of these mistakes. We did not win the ball in that area enough. Also jets wasted so much time it was a joke. To be fair to the ref did add a few minutes on at the end. Also we were more than unlucky not to be awarded a penalty ourselves when a high through ball over the Jets defence saw a defender guide the ball back to his keeper with his forearm. The ref reluctantly blew up but gave a free kick when people in line said it was inside the area.
That is a lot of moaning from me about our bad luck. The truth is if we had played our very best and moved the ball more effectively (Like in last Wednesday's brilliant training session) and also won more of the ball in the middle we could have taken the result out of Lady Luck's hands.
Even so well played to the team and more hard work will see us finish the season well I am sure of it.
