Firstly i must thank Leighton for updating the match report in my absence. The thirds travelled to Essington 2nds for a merit league game. Again the commitment of some was tested to travel long distance (25 miles) so a hardy bunch set off with hopes in their hearts and holes in their socks. Your scribe, who the night before had done battle with a bottle of JD was pleased to find on arrival at Essington that due to his poor maths (CSE grade 3) had a squad of 16 and immediately demoted himself to the bench. The game was a first for a newcomer James Everitt..welcome.. and last for Jas Foster who is leaving for pastures new (Chesterfield) good luck. A slow start to the game meant neither team could break the line but Newcastle slowly increased the pressure and were awarded with a try. Shane Ballard displayed his versatility by kicking which I am sure is against the front row unions law book. This obviously took it toll on him as he soon suffered an ankle injury. Increased pressure by Newcastle led to a second try before half time. The second half was played against the wind and in the eyes of Andy Howell the referee. Andy in the absence of Leighton had decided to carrryout much debating of the finer points of the laws of rugby with the referee, to no avail. The second half was a tight affair but some great work from the backs including Sion, Jake and Jack led to a third try. Judda incensed by the previous allegation in a match report that he had been sin-binned put the matter right by being sin-binned. The game ended shortly after with Newcastle victorious with a 15-0 win.
Man of the match Sion Thomas
