The Swans Hold the Cooks Off.

Newport Pagnell Town 0-0 Cogenhoe United
Future Lions United Counties League Premier Division
Tuesday 15th January 2019

It was a lively start to the game, almost from the kick off a poor defensive header was chased down by Ryan Dove, Swan’s keeper Mark Osborn raced off his line and as Dove jumped for the ball the keeper got there first to punch the ball away, the Cook’s appeals for a penalty were waved away by referee Abdul Kadir. Within minutes Charlie Hynam struck a deep corner kick that Jack O’Connor rose well to get his head to forcing Osborn to tip the ball over his crossbar. The resultant corner was swung in by Liam Tuck, once again Osborn clawed it out from under his bar. As the game settled Newport attacked and Liam Smyth looped a good cross beyond the far post but Tom Liversedge could only head wide. The visitors broke quickly and once again shouted in vain for a penalty as Matt Long went to ground too easily. It looked as if Alex Lowery was about to put United in front, however, his powerful downward header was denied by a brilliant reflex save from Osborn. The Cooks seemed hell bent on wining a penalty and once again their appeals were dismissed as Liam Tuck went down too theatrically for the referee’s liking. The Swans nearly caught the visitors out as a break down the left saw Dom Lawless in a great position in the centre, but Lee Baxter was equal to his low first time shot.

Both sides came out on the front foot after the break but just after the hour mark Yaw Ofosu’s dismissal seemed to tilt the balance of favour towards the visitors. Ofosu picked up two quick bookings, the first seemed harsh as he was deemed to have kicked the ball away, he received his second for a foul that was no worse than many that had previously gone unpunished by players from both sides. The Cooks failed to press home the extra man advantage and found themselves on the back foot following the introduction of Josh Winters and a tactical change by the Swans. Winters was looking lively and he made a great run that ended when he fired his shot just over from the edge of the box. The last chance also fell to Winters, his far post header was narrowly wide of the mark, grazing the wrong side of the post. Both sides had to settle for a point as Newport claimed a second clean sheet in four days.
