Chairman Lora Millward nominated for Newquay Community Award

Newquay Community Award Nominee - Outstanding Community Citizen 2021

Please VOTE for this fabulous member of our club and community along with some other wonderful people in the ‘Outstanding Group’ and ‘Outstanding Youth’ Categories - links below.

This is why NHC nominated Lora for this award:

Having played for Newquay Hockey Club for many years, Lora has also worked tirelessly off the pitch and behind the scenes on the committee whilst regularly coaching and managing our junior squads too. In the past she has fulfilled the time consuming role of Club Secretary and in more recent years has taken on the role of Chairman. As a working mother of two, she works endlessly to raise the profile of the sport in our town, thinking of creative solutions to attract new players, despite us not having a pitch to call ‘home’ in the town itself. Not one to be beat, Lora leads her committee with enthusiasm and tenacity, drumming up interest for the new intake of club members by promoting the club at every opportunity. She insists that junior training sessions remain to run in the town, ensuring that the young boys and girls of Newquay can access hockey sessions locally. Unfortunately, for almost two decades now, the club has had to use Penair pitch in Truro as their home ground for its senior members because the surface in Newquay was no longer deemed suitable for hockey league and cup games when it was resurfaced with a 3G rubber crumb surface. Since this installation, Lora has campaigned passionately and relentlessly; liaising with local schools, businesses and the media to gain momentum and support, ensuring the issue isn’t forgotten and with a hope that one day, Newquay Hockey Club will be training and competing back in Newquay where it belongs. We are so lucky to have such a steadfast and dedicated Charmain leading our club and striving to create these opportunities. This is a dream she will never give up on and she deserves recognition for her ongoing commitment to our club, sport and community.
