Moore 28 -19 Newton-le-willows

Newton took the trip over to our friends in Warrington, Moore RUFC in what was the first run out of the 2019-20 season.

On a day that was perfect for Rugby, sun shining and a nice breeze to keep the heat at bay, Moore started the quicker of the teams catching Newton cold with a quickly taken line out to march up the pitch to score within the first few minutes. Newton had not started well which did not please the coaches who spoke about starting well pre game.

Newton started to click in to gear and started to play some good rugby, particular pleasing as the team were transferring the things that were worked on in training, on to the pitch unfortunately the final pass not sticking which meant the efforts weren't turning in to points. Moore took advantage and grabbed their 2nd try of the game.

Finally Newton took their chance to score when after great work from the pack Kyle Carter chipped over to the wing, narrowly avoiding the Moore Winger, for Leon Pierce to touchdown in the corner.

As this was a friendly match Newton started to make lots of changes trying out new combinations and people in new positions. Unfortunately for Newton, Moore took advantage and once again managed to score. This their 3rd try of the day to put Newton two scores behind once more.

Not to be deterred Newton managed to get back in to the game with a barnstorming run from Danny Reilly, fending off defenders to score a great solo try under the sticks. Some people may argue that his fend should be registered with the police as a dangerous weapon.

Moore were not in this game to roll over an let Newton take the win, they bounced back and scored the next try to extend their lead once more.

The game may have been lost for Newton being a few scores behind with only a few minutes left of the game however they did not give up and posted the final score of the game with a great try from the back line. Starting with Danny Court stepping at the line, feeding Danny Reilly who passed on to Leon Pierce to samoan sidestep the full back to touchdown for his second of the game.

Lots of positives came out of the game for Newton and apart from the result, the game was exactly what Newton had hoped. Some great performances from the players however Danny Court took the Man of the Match on his debut for the club.

We would also like to congratulate Leon Chappell, Mark Hodgson and Alex Skett on their debuts for the club.

Final Shout out must go to Ken Boughey who dusted of his boots to play the game he loves once more along side his two sons Tom and Joe.
