Newton Wonder - Cricket Report - Aug 2015

Another month of mixed fortunes for Newton St Cyres Cricket Club. A fantastic win against Woodbury, thanks to some great bowling, and tidy fielding even with a player short saw us come home victorious. Tom Dowle had his best bowling spell of the season seeing off Woodbury’s top order to finish with 5 wickets for 22 runs, with Andy Cork and Martin Pearce picking up the remainder of the wickets. Leighton Dayman opened the batting with a good knock of 40 and then Martin Pearce (30*) and Shenan Grossberg (15*) finished the match off early.

Unfortunately, despite putting in some good performances we have been unable to get another win. The next week saw 9 brave souls travel to Buckland to take on the fastest bowling of the league, possibly up as high as 80 mph. This proved too much on this occasion and we were all out for 38. However, perhaps the highlight of the match was to see 2 generations of the Dowle family back on the field at the same time.
The next 3 matches saw us take on Topsham, Exwick and Countess Wear. In all 3 matches Newton produced some fantastic bowling against some of the strongest batting in the league and showed why we catch match anyone on the right day. However our batting has been the Achilles heel of the season to date, and despite keeping other teams run rates at bay, we haven’t been able to put regular batting partnerships together. Some notable exceptions have been Usman Manazir (43) and Tom Sunderland (38) against Topsham; Dave Church getting over 60 runs in 2 matches in succession (Exwick and then a friendly against the Beer Engine), and Usman narrowly missing out on a 50 again against Countess Wear, scoring 48 on this occasion.

There’s been a few matches this month where we have been a player of two short, so as always we are keen for new players to join the team. It’s a great social team, and even when results haven’t gone our way, we have put in credible performances, played in good spirit and with a lot of fun. So if you are interested in playing please come along to one of the matches, or contact Paul for more information – paulmccutchion@hotmail.com
